Yes, you can, although it’s helpful if you know how to “count” the pizza in terms of carbohydrate. Many people with diabetes use carbohydrate (carb) counting as method of meal planning. A person may have a carbohydrate goal for each meal, such as 45 grams of carb. If this were your goal, you would then look up the carb value of pizza (using a food counts book or an online food database) and you might see that a slice of thin-crust cheese pizza from a 14” diameter pizza has 16 grams of carb. Two slices would therefore have about 30 grams of carb, and three slices, 45 grams of carb. Of course, thicker crust pizza will be higher in carb. And you also have to take into consideration any other carb foods that you plan to eat at your meal as well, such as fruit, milk, dessert, etc. If you’re new to diabetes and/or meal planning, it’s helpful to meet with a dietitian who can give you more specific guidance, based on your individual needs and preferences. Ask your doctor for a referral to a dietitian in your area.
