A:

The most important first step in helping you gain weight will be to make sure you are working with an experienced and well trained team. For someone your age, it’s important to have an endocrinologist and a dietitian who have experience working with teens. The endocrinologist will review your blood glucose and insulin history in great detail. The dietitian will take a detailed history of what you are eating and will help you make choices, based on your lifestyle and food preferences, that will help you add calories without making your blood glucose get out of control. Also, weight loss and/or the inability to gain weight can be caused from high blood glucose levels. When blood glucose levels are high, much of the energy you take in never makes it into the cells to help your body build muscle and fat. If your A1C is high, it is important to get it lower, and this is usually done with the help of your diabetes team. There are also other digestive problems (like Celiac disease) that can make it hard to gain weight. Talk to your parents and your doctors about all of these issues and make sure you get an appointment with an endocrinologist, a diabetes educator and a dietitian.
