Q:

I have toenail fungus on my big toe. I have developed a small dark spot on it. Could this be due to my diabetes?

Patty Bonsignore

A:

Fungal infections of the toenail are more common for people with diabetes. Higher than usual blood glucose levels and poorer circulation to the feet are two common reasons for this. If you have a dark spot on your toe, it’s important to have your primary care provider look at the area to make sure you do not have something other than a fungal infection starting. Fungal infections of the toenail are treatable, but the treatment can sometimes cause side effects much more serious than the fungal infection itself. Talk to your primary care provider or your podiatrist about treatment options.
