Q:

How many carbs should I eat per meal? I am 57, take oral meds and weigh 104 pounds.

Amy Campbell

A:

The amount of carbohydrate one should eat varies from person to person, based on age, gender, weight, physical activity and level of diabetes control. Meeting with a dietitian is your best bet in terms of figuring out how much carb (along with protein and fat) that you need. He or she will take into consideration the factors I just mentioned, as well as any other health or medical issues that you may have. However, in the meantime, a general carbohydrate goal for women is to aim for about 30 to 45 grams of carb per meal and 15 grams of carb per snack; men can aim for 45 to 60 grams of carb for meals and 15 to 30 grams of carb for snacks.
