Q:

Can novalog insulin be substituted for humalog?

Dr. David Erani

A:

Yes. Novolog (apsart) insulin is a rapid-acting insulin made by Novo Nordisk. Humalog (lispro) is a rapid-acting insulin made by Eli Lilly. Apidra (glulisine) is another rapid-acting insulin. It is made by Sanofi. Each of these starts working within 15 minutes. Their effects peak in 30 min. to 3 hours and last 3-5 hours. Their quick onset of action and relatively short duration of action make them well-suited for prevention of hyperglycemia after meals. Unfortunately, the brand names Novolog and Humalog can lead to some confusion. They are not to be confused with Novolin and Humulin, which are short-acting insulins, made by Novo Nordisk or Eli Lilly respectively.
