Hello, is it really necessary to use alcohol swabs before testing blood glucose levels, or is simply washing and drying your hands well good enough? And welcome to the site.

Hi Caliko, how are you today? It is recommended to use alcohol swabs as a better way to ensure that the test area is clean but soap and warm water will work just the same. My DAD does either or and his results have always been fine. I did however find a really good blog and some comments on it that you may find interesting.

Aren't alcohol wipes only recommended for infrequent not frequent use? Blood sugar testing is done frequently and alcohol is known to dry out the skin. Using alcohol wipes each time can dry out your skin very quickly and cause some serious long term problems with cracked and infected fingers in diabetics.
