I am new to being a diabetes caregiver. Do I focus on amount of carbs, sugar, fats per meal or go with a healty diet?

That’s an excellent question. I would strongly encourage you to meet with a dietitian to learn the best approach for the person for whom you are caring. It’s likely that you will need to control the amount of carbohydrate this person is consuming, as carbohydrate is the nutrients with the most impact on blood glucose levels. However, the method that you use to do so can vary, so it’s a good idea to get more specific guidance from a dietitian . Ask your family member/friend to request a referral from their physician to see a dietitian . This is time well spent and will make your role a lot easier.

Not an answer I would give. Dietitians often get this wrong. You'll need to spend some time educating yourself. Start with Dr. Bernstein's book: Revised and Updated 2011 Diabetes Solution.
