Q:

I have several auto immune diseases including IDDM and have chronic pain. I just discovered that a heating pad helps with the chronic pain. I have been reading on this site that we (diabetics) should never use a heating pad. Please give me your opinion on this. Thank you so much for your time.

The problem with heating pad use for people with diabetes is that one can be burned without realizing it, especially if he or she falls asleep on the heating pad or has it set too high. Many people with diabetes have a condition, diabetic neuropathy, in which the nerves don’t feel temperature or pain normally. One may have some neuropathy and not realize it, which is why it’s so important to be careful when it comes to heating pad use. Talk to your doctor about whether use of a heating pad on a low setting would be okay for you. You may also want to ask him or her if there are any other treatments you could try for your pain that do not involve heat.

Do you have any other suggestions for neuropathy? I suffer with it in both legs terribly?
