Q:

Is it safe for me to try raspberry ketones? I have been a type 1 diabetic for 40 years and have always had a weight problem.

Amy Campbell

A:

Raspberry ketones have soared in popularity thanks to their mention on Dr. Oz’s show last February. Raspberry ketone is a chemical found in raspberries that gives them their scent. It’s also used as a flavoring and coloring agent in foods and cosmetics. Raspberry ketones helped to prevent weight gain in mice fed a high-fat diet, supposedly by promoting the breakdown of fat. However, there are no studies in humans at this time showing that raspberry ketones are effective. In addition, raspberry ketone supplements contain higher amounts of this compound than that which is naturally found in raspberries, so we don’t know what the side effects could be. They do contain another chemical that’s similar to the stimulant synephrine, which could possibly increase blood pressure and cause a rapid heartbeat. My advice would be to not take this supplement until more research indicates that it’s safe and effective.
