Aside from going to a doctor, are there ways to check if I have diabetes just by myself?

Diabetes can only be diagnosed with a blood test from a certified lab. This test can be a fasting blood test, an A1C, a 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test or a random blood glucose of over 200 with symptoms. The test has to be verified with one other positive test result for a diagnosis to be made. For instance, if the A1C is used to diagnose diabetes, than a second test would need to be ordered to confirm the diagnosis. You can check your blood glucose using a home monitor, but these are not accurate enough to make a diagnosis. If money is an issue, talk to your state or local health department and find out where free testing might be available.
