Do you think I am diabetic? I was told I am diabetic four years ago with an A1C of 5.8. Someone said that with a reading like that I am not diabetic. What is your opinion? I only take 500 mg of Metformin once or twice a day.
An A1C of 5.8 % is indicative of pre-diabetes, not diabetes. An A1C of 6.5% or higher is diagnostic for diabetes. Your healthcare provider, however, may have done a fasting blood glucose test. If your fasting blood glucose four years ago was 126 or higher, two times in a row, this would indicate that you have diabetes. Pre-diabetes and diabetes can both be treated with metformin, so just because you are on metformin does not mean you have diabetes. However, whether you have type 2 diabetes in its very early stages or pre-diabetes. the treatment is likely to be the same -- the goal is to lose weight (only 7 % of your total body weight ---for many this is less than 20 lbs) and be physical activity 30 minutes 5 days per week. Eating less carbohydrate and less saturated fat can also help. Talk to your doctor about seeing a nutritionist to help you with meal planning and weight loss.
