I take Metformin twice a day, but my doctor never told me whether to take it before meals or after meals. I'm very confused and am new to diabetes since May.

The manufacturer’s recommendations for taking metformin advise taking it with food to prevent stomach upset; taking it right after the meal is also fine. Some diabetes drugs are to be taken with the meal as a precaution against low blood glucose levels. Metformin does not typically cause lows, so taking it with a meal is not imperative. If you can tolerate taking it on an empty stomach, then there’s no problem doing that. The most important aspect of taking metformin is to be consistent and take it when you can best remember it.

The only thing is that Metformin is very hard on the stomach. I have a friend that is on the drug and was taking it before her meal and it was tearing up her stomach. Her dr suggested that she take it sometime during her meal.
