Diabetic Complications With Leg Swelling

Diabetes can affect more than the blood sugars; diabetes is a lifelong illness that can impact the circulatory system, eyes and even the kidneys. A multitude of diabetic complications can stem from erratic blood sugars, diet and lifestyle. Edema, or swelling and fluid retention, frequently affects the legs and feet due to gravity and circulatory complications. Diabetic complications with leg swelling are dependant upon the factors of time endured, accompanying symptoms, lifestyle and the severity of blood sugar fluctuations.

I actually forgot I had this article on swollen feet! I've been suffering a great deal with feet and leg swelling along w/tingling and numbness in my hands. And some the comments here I also share like extreme tenderness to the point of much, much PAIN!!! My endocrinologist gave me insulin[that wasn't the answer] then combined it w/Actos-that was too much glucose reduction-I then experienced low sugar symtoms [hypog.] then took me off of insulin and now just actos[45 mg.]salt and some spices seem to bring on the swelling-even in my eyelids and neck[CYBORGMAN] at times. Because of pain, I'm rarely awake much longer than 4 hours a time, I sleep a lot. It's like my only relief most of the time! I seriously fear amputation and I do not think highly of most of the medical help[if you an call it that] that I've received [poor insurance] care since 2006 when I was first admitted to hospital for 5days of testing [including MRI's and bone scans and CT scans of my feet and spine. I hate to say I feel rotten,I do mean ROTTEN most of the time! I'll be 56 shortly, on my 50th b-day death would've been a welcome relief. But I'm not suicidal-so I feel kinda STUCK!!!.. if that ain't bad enough I read that France discontinued the sales and duse of ACTOS due to possible bladder cancer [of course it's the only thing that seems to help w/glucose controll for me!…'nuff said…

I have problems with my legs swelling. But my biggest worry is that I have like knots in my legs. When you rub across it(the knot); it hurts. Even the slightest of all soft touches it hurts. Should I inform my doctor about this?

I don't believe it's the fluctuations that are causing the problems. It's the high A1C's that should be the causative effect.

An analogy would be:
which would wear out your washing machine faster?
Little light loads or big HEAVY loads?

Ans: big heavy loads (AKA High A1C's).

Light loads would be the ups and downs.
Heavy loads would be the ups or high blood sugars.

Interesting that the entire medical field seems skewed in the direction of 'keep paying a LOT now, then DIE when you turn 65'.

I figured out how to control every health number without medications. Weight, A1C, Lipids, etc. And the way I did it baffled the doctors a bit. If I can achieve perfectly NORMAL A1C's, then how is it the medical field won't advise people how to control their numbers?

Diabetic complications are caused by high blood sugars, particularly your fasting blood sugars. Even normal people have high blood sugar spikes. It's how long the spikes are there determines the damage.

MANY health problems can be reversed, at least to a significant degree, *IF* you change your lifestyle.
Eat right does not mean eat what the FDA or government says you should, not any nutritionist either.

Of course, daily exercise is more important that anything.
They say 'diet and exercise' Well, they have that backwards. It's "exercise and diet", in that order.
I went out on my own treatment plan at time of Dx. Within 6-7 months I as a picture of health! Then I went on the diet and exercise they doctors want. I regained a whopping FIFTY pounds, my cholesterol is very high, and now I am getting some swelling.
I may go back to my own treatment plan. Tired of being unhealthy…

I go walking every morning, and during the time I am walking I feel a tingling in my hands. Does this tingling have anything to do with neuropathy?
