Jeanette Terry was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 11 years old, and she has since lived with diabetes through difficult life transitions, including the teenage years, college, and having children. She addresses the day-to-day struggles of living with diabetes—going beyond medical advice—to improve overall adherence and management.

Diabetes can seem overwhelming at times and often has a very negative reputation. While diabetes does bring with it many challenges, it doesn’t have to ruin anyone’s life or even have a completely negative impact. Sometimes a diabetes diagnosis can bring on a very healthy lifestyle change that can greatly benefit one’s life.

Bharti Khandoo has been living with type 2 diabetes for 15 years and feels that it has changed his life for the better. He has chosen to have a positive perspective on a disease that can be devastating if you allow it to be.

“Diabetes hasn’t changed my life in a negative way at all; instead it has made me live a healthier life,” Khandoo said.

Successful diabetes management has to include a positive outlook on life and our continuing link to diabetes. There is no way to get away from this disease. Denial will only make it worse and could possibly result in dangerous complications. Once we choose to embrace diabetes as a part of our life, and not a negative part I might add, then we can successfully start making healthy lifestyle choices that will benefit our health for years to come.

The healthier we are, the happier we are. Health isn’t only about physical activity and eating right. It also includes emotional health, which in this case is a key factor in gaining a positive perspective on diabetes. Positivity is a choice. The more we choose to enjoy life, no matter what it includes, the healthier we will become and the more motivated we will be to live a healthy lifestyle.
