It may be a good idea to start on insulin as a treatment option for a newly diagnosed type 2 patient. Insulin may seem like a last resort for many type 2 patients, but is that really the case?
This study clearly shows that we may not be doing such a good job treating newly diagnosed adolescents with type 2 diabetes. I often hear parents say,"Well, at least my child won't need to be on insulin," like that would indicate what they perceive as having a "bad case" of diabetes.
This, of course, is not the case. Insulin is not at all an indication of the degree of illness, but is in fact often the best treatment option for achieving good diabetes control. Insulin delivery has gotten much easier, with insulin pens being a much more portable method for injecting insulin.
Remember, if you are put on insulin by your health care team, it can be a very good thing for your overall health, as this study confirms.
