Weight loss is hard, but it’s not impossible—and many people have dropped pounds and proved it. Want to lose weight? Eat like someone who’s already done it! Take a break from the fad diets and check out the eating plans of weight-loss champions according to data collected from MyFitnessPal.

MyFitnessPal is a free smartphone app owned by the popular fitness company Under Armour. Users can set goals, input their meals, and track their exercise all in an easy-to-use app. MyFitnessPal has 150 million users. (That is a lot of weight-loss data!)

The app creators wanted to find out if the people who are successfully losing weight have distinctly different diets from those struggling more with their goals. A “successful user” was classified as someone who set a weight-loss goal and made it to within five percent of that goal weight. Some of their diet commonalities were surprising.

More fiber

The biggest standout in the difference between the successful-user diet and the standard-user diet was fiber. Those who were able to reach or come close to their weight-loss goals ate 29 percent more fiber than the average user. The number of carbs they ate wasn’t vastly different, but their carb choices were. Successful dieters ate 17 percent more cereals, which helped them up that fiber intake. If you want to get more fiber in your diet, consider high-fiber foods like:

  • Corn
  • Oatmeal
  • Beans (black, white, kidney)
  • Chickpeas
  • Avocados
  • Whole-wheat pasta
  • Edamame
  • Artichokes
  • Raspberries
  • Green peas
  • Apples (with the skin on)
  • Barley

Less meat

The weight-loss champs found non-animal protein sources to be one of their diet staples. The success group ate 11 percent less meat and 13 percent fewer eggs than other users and opted for healthy fats with protein by eating 11 percent more yogurt and 10 percent more almonds.

Healthy swap-outs

Olive oil has dropped in popularity the past couple of years, but the weight losers used 10 percent more than the rest of the population. Olive oil can often be used in cooking instead of unhealthy ingredients like butter.

It can also be mixed with some balsamic vinegar for a great healthy salad dressing. Coconut oil was also popular with weight-loss champs, another ingredient that can replace butter. Those who were successful at losing weight also ate more fruits and vegetables, two of the staples of staying healthy.

Eat smart

Ultimately, the MyFitnessPal users who were able to reach their weight loss goals were making smart and healthy eating choices. To break down some of the choices they were making:

Eat more:

  • Vegetables
  • Raw fruit
  • Grains
  • Cereal
  • Yogurt
  • Olive oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Almonds

Eat less:

  • Pasta
  • Potatoes
  • Meat
  • Eggs

There is no one-size-fits-all diet plan, so figure out what works for you and stick with it! And if you are looking for some inspiration, there’s no better example than the people who have already done what you are trying to do.
