The funniest thing is as I was watching How I met your Mother tonight a character mentioned the "hershey squirts". I almost fell of my chair laughing.

The biggest thing to be careful of with sugar free is that often, they use another form of sugar, or an artificial sugar that the body treats in exactly the same way as the real stuff, or worse, one thinks whatever reduced sugar in the candy is "free", and gorges themselves so that they have effectively had too much of it anyways, AND over indulged on the other stuff they put in it for flavor, texture, color, etc. that are harmless in small doses, but can have side affects in mass quantity. ( a tummy ache being the least of possible problems)
My two cents worth, feel free to keep the change.

Sugarfree candy is loaded with poison. Look it up on the computer. That's why I say a rock and hard place you can't have sugar or sugarfree stuff. Fruit is your best bet. Diane

Howdy Diane!

Fruit has problems for us diabetics too.

Also I'm not sure what you mean by "poison". What is in SF candy that is "poison"?

Most of the sugar substitutes and the chemicals to make the sugar free foods are things you would not eat if you knew what they were. I don't eat any sugar free stuff, it's hard to even find gum that is natural and not filled with artificial sweeteners. Moderation is the key and keeping it natural.

I read somewhere that sugar alcohols are bad for you but why is that? don't some of those sugar free candies have strange ingredients? I ilke to have one of those Russell Stover sugar free marshmellow chocolate eggs this time of year. I don't eat them often, but most taste good to me. Sometimes I like to eat 'regular' things like just one piece or half a piece (share with my daughter) easter candy those Russell Stover truffles or coconut eggs are great!

I get the laxative effects from some of the sugar alcohols too. But the worst is Maltitol. That gives me severe stomach cramps. So I have to read the labels before buying anything that is sugar free or light.

I don't know the bio chemical reasons why Sugar alcohols do it to me, but I get a "laxative effect" if I eat them. Not everyone has that problem but many ppl do. I have had problems in that way, so I avoid them. But everybody's body is different, so you might be able to get away with it. But if you try it and wonder why your stools are loose, that's probably the reason.

Those "strange ingredients" are the sugar alcohols IMO.

Howdy again Rhonda. Did you know that you didn't have an active link for that? I looked it up and here it is: http://www.diabeticcandy.com/

That being said, I really can't use candy sweetened with sugar alcohols or splenda. They give me a "laxitive effect" (aka "hershey squirts") The only sugar alcohol that doesn't seem to do that is eritherol. Everything I've seen is with Malitol.

Thanks for posting this anyway. Maybe someone else could use it.

I've only seen it in Hershey's candy, never with another brand. But when I found it about 8 yrs ago, i5 was at 99 cents store. It tells me that it wasn't considered very successful Glad I gave you a chuckle, even if it was at me!

no no no!! never at but with you though =) I get the same effects so it is good that I just stay away from it altogether. I have yet to find anything that satisfies that craving anyway so I just try to curb the craving and forget about the sweets.

That's the way I am too. If I REALLY HAFTA have something sweet, I just stay with regularly sweetened sweets (Ice cream is my weakness) but must control my intake.

I agree, I like the real thing myself. I am not a lover of sugarless treats because of the after taste. I know that a lot of diabetics enjoy eating it…
