Accu-Chek Aviva and Compact plus, OneTouch Ultra line and Freestyle Lite are common meters that you can use alternative testing sites with. I would also recommend the accu-chek multiclix lancing device. Once you set it to your liking it's virtually pain free. As far as I know the Aviva is the only meter that comes with this device and all the other ones I've used that came bundled with the meter have been junk and painful to use. Also, make sure you are using all your fingers and pricking the sides near the top of the finger but not the pad or tip.

There are some products that are still being developed. One of my kid's teachers who is diabetic was able to test one during a trial. The device she tested used a laser to test blood through the skin.

Unfortunately, there were problems with the laser and people were getting burned.

So the good news is, yes, there are some new technologies being developed. The bad news is, none of them are available yet.

But you might want to check out the FreeStyle meters. They use a very small blood sample and so you can prick your forearm (many fewer nerves than your fingertips) and get enough blood to test.

I hope that helps.
