There is a recent discussion on free meteres from www.defeatdiabetes.org.

Also if you go to Lifescan's site they give away OneTouch Ultramini meters for free. I've got about 3-4 of the minis and 2 Ultra2s. They're excellent and if you get the cable you can download your results to your PC.

I know that Rite-Aid sells this super small one now that's about the size of a silver dollar…strips look pretty cheap.

I know there have been some recent post on how to get a free meter and I believe it was mentioned that the test strips for the meter were only about 14 dollars. That's the thing there are many free meter give aways online but the strips for most of them are very expensive. Look back and you'll see the post it was pretty recent and the price was super good on the strips for it! I wish you the very best and I'm so sorry you have to go through this time of uncertainity. Ipray your money for disability will come in soon! I am also on ssi and it really helps! A few months ago I guess I had an overpayment and they stopped my check for 3months! It was soo rough! So I know how you feel. Hang in there and take care of yourself! Your in my prayers. God bless you!
