I take Metformin twice daily. When is the best time to take it? I barely eat breakfast so is it better to wait before lunch or first thing in the morning?
Any suggestions?

It depends on the type and amount. If it's regular and more than 1500mg then during breakfast and dinner are the best times. Something light is fine but make sure it has protein, fat and light on the carb. If it's regular and 1500mg or less or the extended release then you can take it all at once whenever you want, as long as it's the same time every day. During dinner is popular.

You should re-evaluate breakfast, it's very important for diabetics to eat breakfast to help keep blood sugar good all day. Avoid things that are high carb and carb heavy. For instance 15-20g of carb may be good if you eat something like an egg as well but on it's own it wouldn't be too good. Only your blood sugar meter can help you figure out the best amounts for your body though.

Oh, makes you wonder if some Dr.'s ever even THINK that the patient is walking out the door with little or no knowledge of their condition…do the Dr.'s think that is their only responsibility …just diognose, and hand out a Rx?!?'s
You need to get informed if you are going to get control. See if DR. can refer you to a Diabetes Class, or a Certified Diabetic Dietician.
This is a great site, filled with caring, knowlegeble people…you will learn a lot here, and get great answers to your questions, and support !
I too take Metformin twice a day…breakfastand dinner. You really do need to eat, or drink a smoothy, or protein of some kind in the morning.Helps with your metabalism and to keep your BG on an even level.
Good Luck!

Hi I take mine in the morning. I think its personal preference but I also take insulin shots too. I take one shot in the morning after my pill then I take my other shots after meals:

I take mine at 9am with breakfast and then the second at 9pm with a snack, taking it later than dinner helps my morning numbers stay lower.

Work out a schedule that works for your numbers and when you go back to the doctor ask as many questions as you have on your mind, sometimes you have to make them help you the way you need. And if the doctor you have now won't do it the way you need it take your business elsewhere.

Thanks, for the input. I found out I was diabetic on Wednesday. I felt I was handed medicine and shoved out the door.

I have read several times where people felt the same as you. I feel bad for you and everyone else who felt that way because my doctor spent so much time with me the day he diagnosed me (01-17-11) as well as both of my follow up visits since that day. He gave me a dozen pages of information on food, carbs and the food pyramid as well as a nice cookbook put out by the ADA. I was at his office for three hours that first day. Not all three hours with him sitting looking at me - he had other patients with appointments so he would go see them and then come back to see me. Either him or his nurse was coming in the room every 15 minutes or so - talking to me, bringing me more materials or supplies & making sure I had the injections and BG checks understood. I was well informed after that first visit, but I was in too much shock to fully realize how much I had just learned.

When my doctor said he was putting me on Metformin he told me to take it twice a day, once in the morning & once in the evening, both with meals because the medicine can cause stomach problems in some people if taken on an empty stomach (and I already have to take Omeprazole daily, so I didn't need additional stomach problems). When I stated that I don't generally eat breakfast and asked should I wait & take the first one at lunch he said no, that I need to add breakfast to my day and take the first one with breakfast. He said I need to have breakfast to try to keep my BG on a more even keel. He also said breakfast would give my metabolism the start it needed for each day and it would help prevent overeating at lunch. He told me that I need to work on eating smaller amounts more frequently rather than just 2 larger meals a day.

So, knowing how much he has talked to me and how much he has told me just makes me feel bad when people feel that their doctor says "You have Diabetes, here are some prescriptions" and pushes you out the door for you to go learn it on your own.

On the upside - you found this site and the people here are VERY helpful 7 friendly! I have now come into the habit of checking in here at least one a day. Sometimes I don't post anything but just read a lot and sometimes I post. But I find an awful lot of help and helpful information on this site. Bless you and Good Luck!

I take metformin twice a day as well. I take mine with breakfast and with dinner. My doctor said it was best to take one in the morning and then one after dinner. Check with your doctor.
