Does anyone know how to tell if your diabetic. The blood work 3 wks ago for my heart trouble said my glucose was at 136mg/dl which is high, last night just out of curiosity I checked it with a friends meter and it was 307mg/dl on the meter they this a dangerous level, now I did eat shortly before, the person the meter belonged to said even after eating it shouldn't be that high, we went straight to wal-mart and bought a meter a strips, I checked it before I went to bed it was 127mg/dl, this morning it was 136mg/dl. I do have my printout from my heart labs 3 wks ago and I know that the target range is 70 - 99mg/dl. I've never had any problems with it before, does this mead I becoming a Diabetic ?

clay3636 Have you been drinking a lot of water, had a dry mouth? Urineating a lot these are signs you are diebetic. Numbers over 150 my doctor tells me you are destroying the small blood vescles that supply blood to your body organs. Cold feet, numbness, eye problems. All go hand and hand. Good luck with your Fasting blood sugar test. Your doctor will probable put you on Metformin.

The A1c results are in and were very close to being a diabetic they said something about 6.4, I'm not sure what this is, so now I'm being sent for another test, fasting, and to drink that milky liquid and hang out for 2 hrs blood-work every 30 min.

6.4 is good and the other test will tell if u r a diabetic or not so do not worry about the 6.4 it just states that ur bg has been good for the last three months

A1c is not a home run test for diagnosis however 6.4 shows you have a problem. It's good you are getting a fasting blood sugar and oral glucose tolerance test, all of those combined will give you a pretty definitive answer. Even though home meters are not accurate enough to diagnose, I would imagine that after all the tests are done you will be diagnosed as diabetic or at the very least, pre-diabetic.

I think your numbers indicate that you should be tested for diabetes. The levels are high, but you have some other issues going on that may be making your levels worse than usual. I'm not saying to ignore it, everyone is right that you should discuss with your doctor. I'm just saying your doctor may want to have an A1C test or a glucose tolerance test, or both, before diagnosing you. Good luck!

Do u know the signs of diabetes is the first question? And second ur bs is good except for the 307 they say that it needs to be between 80 and 140 so that was a good reading. But if you r still worried about it ask the doc.

I met with resistance to a doctor actually diagnosing it. What I did (besides change doctors) was what you are doing. I got me a test meter and strips (you can get free ones) and I tracked it for about a month (a couple of weeks would do) and I took it to my appointment and said "here". She saw right away there was a major problem.

i agree with the other comments about checking with your doctor. I would certainly get a fasting number…if thats a little high at least you'll know and can move on to the next step… good luck:) :)

Id go to the doctor and get checked immediatly. Your levels shouldn't be over 145- I have to inject insulin at 150 or above. I also inject insulin every morning no matter what. Its very important for your health to be diagnosed by a doctor so he can give you a treatment plan to keep you healthy. I wish you the very best of luck and make the doctors appointment soon please!

I would definitely consult with a doctor to read your results and consult with you on a diagnosis. The levels you are mentioning, providing accurate equipment, is most certainly on the high side. I was diagnosed by a fasting glucose reading of 136. Talk about being thrown for a loop. I had no family history, was not obese, nor held any of the risk factors. I am not on insulin or medications for diabetes and pretty much under control. Your doctor needs to be the one to offer the medical support while we are here for the emotional side of things. Get on the phone with a medical professional for them to review the blood work you had and maybe take their own fasting glucose reading for a diagnosis, which we are not qualified to give over the computer.
