well after years of having bad teeth and seriously needing them out I am using part of my income tax to have my teeth taken out. Both of my parents have had to have theirs out due to heart problems. Thing is it is sooooo expensive to do. A total 5200.00 for me. My ins will cover like 1500. I had no idea until my Mom had to have hers out that your teeth and your heart are a direct line to each other. If you have bad teeth you well end up with heart trouble. So right now I don't have a heart problem right now but having them out Feb 24! I do not plan on getting dentures until the swelling has gone down. I do not care what I look like in the meantime because Im am doing this to be healthier!!!!

so yesterday friday I took a day of vacation to go to get a consult to have my teeth out…got there and they were closed for the day. I was MAD. So I ended up coming back and taking my Mom to the doc…both my parents are not doing well right now and Im really stressed and frustrated…is a lot to take care of people

jayabee52 2011-03-12 23:40:57 -0600 Report

OH BUMMER! Sorry you wasted a day of vacation time.

I certainly do know about taking care of people. But you do it willingly (if maybe not so cheerfully sometimes) because you love them.

mkhojh99 2011-03-13 19:33:18 -0500 Report

right…sometimes its a bit much but they are my parents. I do have a brother but he does not help out. So sometimes I do get really stressed but try to just do something to unstress…

Been there done that 30 years ago! I always had bad teeth and a lot of pain. I have never looked back or had a real problem except for some gagging. If anyone has a idea regarding gagging when wearing dentures, please advise.

Oh how we learn on these boards. I never heard of this before and will be looking it up tonight. This is very interesting.

That is quite the substantial savings for you. It pays to look around and check things out.

I wish you the very best of luck!! ~ Cheryl

I have been considering having my uppers removed and replaced by implants. I heard a report on National Public Radio about dental tourism to MX where one can get work done for a quarter of the cost in the USA. I have to go back and look it up on the NPR site and refresh my memory about it.

mkhojh99 2011-02-19 22:46:26 -0600 Report

so far just been thinking about what foods to eat after surgery…and how it will affect my meds…lots to think about. I am kinda excited to get them out to be honest. No more daily pus pockets in my mouth…I will eventually feel a great deal better. Maybe get a second job to help out unless my job picks up and we get OT…last year was so AWESOME for OT…I worked 7 days a week 8 hours a day for months…all while watching 4 kids only 1 was mine and taking care of my parents and being sick sand desperatly needing my tonsils out!!!!!

Have you tried shopping around at different dentists? I've heard that you can sometimes haggle a little and maybe bring the price down some. You are a brave woman and smart to take care of this before any other issues arise. Good luck!!!

I have…we have a community dental place that would of been perfect but the only oral surgeon is out having heart surgery. So will just have to grin and bear it and keep reminding myself I will be healthier!!!

CoRinaB 2011-02-09 09:34:42 -0600 Report

Yes, do keep reminding yourself about how healthier you'll be!!! You'll do just fine at the dentist. You're one tough cookie to make this kind of decision. Take care and again, GOOD LUCK!!!

Go for it! I removed all mine last May and do not regret it. My dentist is very gentle and patient and I now have for the first time in my life a beautiful smile. My health has also improved! I am praying for you, your dentist and your surgeon!

Wow, you are a brave soul. I don't think I could do that. I know there are a lot of links to intestinal troubles with bad teeth, I didn't know they were connected to heart issues as well. Our bodies are pretty amazing.

mkhojh99 2011-02-07 17:23:52 -0600 Report

I would not of known that but both my parents had to have theirs out due to heart trouble. My Dads were so bad he ended up spending 3 weeks in the hospital starting in May…and he is now on dialysis and on the kidney transplant list. Our bodies are amazing…wish I would of taken better care of myself when I was younger…lol

did I mention I just turned 40…in Jan? And for years I didnt take care of myself…always seem to worry and care about others first…so this year I will do that but first take some me time…in small amounts!!!!!

Rebagv 2011-02-07 22:23:14 -0600 Report

Wow! I just turned 40 in January, too. I also have bad teeth. Some were already pulled out a few years back because they were infected. I don't even know if I get new teeth that my health will suffer. I worry about the costs, but I know that I am healthier because of those teeth being pulled out. Your decision is the best you can make. Take care of yourself.

mkhojh99 2011-02-08 06:19:16 -0600 Report

I too worry about cost since my income basically supports my daughter and pretty much my parents but if I want to be around for awhile longer it must be done. I am trying hard not to worry and give it sll to God!!

Rebagv 2011-02-08 07:51:15 -0600 Report

Yes! We have to turn these issues to God. I go through my ups and downs. Sometimes, I get so depressed and just give up on the idea of fixing my teeth. Just being honest. I also feel that people look down on me because of my missing teeth. I hold a Bachelor's Degree, but my confidence is so down. All I can do is to keep going forward.

mkhojh99 2011-02-08 17:01:26 -0600 Report

Hey I understand completely!!!! I have people who stare at my mouth just to see inside. I think people put too much emphass on looks. I too am very self concious I try not to let stuff bother me…but it does. I will share something with you…in May of 201 I had some symtoms and thru research I figuered out I had Bells Palsy. Went to my doc and said I have Bells Palsy what can you do to help. He had to look it up and gave me steroids and that helped me greatly…within days I could speak better. Thing is with Bells Palsy your face pulls to one side like a stroke…and well my bad teeth showed so I tried so hard not to laugh or anything. Well one day something happened to my co worker and I couldnt help but laughing…she stared and wasnt laughing with me but at me. About 15 minutes later I looked over to where she was and seen her and another man making fun of me. She was pulling her mouth to the side and laughing…I couldnt hear what was said but by the actions and laughing I KNEW. Its crap like that that pisses me off. I couldnt help having Bells Palsy…So I do know and understand!!!

Rebagv 2011-02-08 17:24:39 -0600 Report

It's sad that people are so into the looks instead of seeing past into the heart of the person they are injuring. Yes, I had to take steroids, too, for my Bell's Palsy. My husband took me to the emergency room and the guy that saw me knew immediately what it was.

mkhojh99 2011-02-08 17:36:53 -0600 Report

It took me a few days cuz my started as ear aches then loudness and so on. I was like my Moms had a stoke…its not that…so I looked on webmd and was like BINGO I have Bells Palsy…my Mom had it years ago is why I suspected that. But yes people are rude sometimes.

Rebagv 2011-02-09 02:41:26 -0600 Report

For me, my husband came home after word and saw that my face was drooping. He's the one to take action. Later, I went for a checkup with a family doctor and he have me a shot of Vitamin B. He said that it would not do anything for the Bell's Palsy but would help with the energy. He also gave me a handout with the pictures of the facial exercises to do.
I had been going through a lot. My mother was in her last months of life, suffering with colon cancer, and I had been living out of town with my husband and 3 kids. I dyed my hair—chemicals, possible allergy. I'm sensitive to cold air after showering. Also, I had the bull's eye rash that accompanies a tick bite (but I never had that confirmed). Also, diabetics are prone to Bell's Palsy, but I no longer had been afflicted with gestational diabetes.
My mom thought that it was because of all the stress. Go figure!

mkhojh99 2011-02-09 06:36:18 -0600 Report

wow thats a lot on your plate. I truely believe mine was stress induced as well. I had been laid off from a good job in mar 09 and wasnt able to get a job but got called back in feb 10. But my brothers ex wife dumped their 3 kids off here to live…my brother was never home and at his gf's house so that left me to care for 3 kids who didnt listen and were naughty along with my kid and it just got to me…finally when i got bells palsy and had to take my dad into the ER I said take your own kids and watch them and DO NOT ask me to babysit!!! So they did but that was a HUGE stresser for me

Rebagv 2011-02-09 15:36:07 -0600 Report

Yeah, it's tough when you are the caregiver, but when you or your offspring need caring, no one is around. That's why I hardly ask anyone for help because I know I will be disappointed.

MewElla 2011-02-07 08:26:07 -0600 Report

To put yourself at the head of a line is difficult but something we all need to do. I am as guilty as anyone, did the same thing, I was totally at the back of the line and everyone came first. But, if I don't take of me, THEY will have to. Glad to hear you made this important decision…You get a star for the day.

mkhojh99 2011-02-07 17:21:39 -0600 Report

thanks…I have been taking care of my parents for a few years. Started out doing little things and their health is not good…and then 2010 was a bad health year for us. So I decided I have to take some me time every now and again.

Look for a First dental of a dent-first they take them out and give you denchers at the same time and they are a lot better priced ???
Best wishes

You Go!!! Dentures (and temporary dentures) are in my future with a price tag of around $1800 out of pocket after insurance payments so I have a decent dental plan. I have the money in my flex spending account. Now I just need to make the appointment(s). Please keep us posted on your journey. I am totally behind you on this. I had terrible pain, bad breath, and fought constant infections for years. I was scared to have my teeth out because of worrying about healing afterwards. I went to a good dentist and told her I was diabetic. She worked with me, put me on antibiotics before the surgery, I had the top ones done first and got my new dentures the same day. Everything went very well. I waited 6 weeks and went back and got the bottom done. It was the best thing I ever did! My over all health has improved, and it helped me with keeping my numbers under better control too, no more fighting constant infections. Good luck, you'll be very glad you spent the money! :)

see I had Bells Palsy in May of 10 and they put me on steroids and within hours of taking the first dose I had Massive strep infection. This last until Aug when I had my tonsils removed. I am always having infections and being sick. So I finally just said with my income tax they are getting taken out. I also had this stuff call Foliculitius…it an infection of the hair follicules that can happen all over your body. Thatnk God mine wasnt too bad…but those little infection sites were filled with staph infection. Some of the sites have left bad scars too…so in time I will feel great…do better on my sugars…they should of been taken out a few years ago…
