i just recently had to see a kidney specialist. he told me with the diabetes, it has affected my kidneys. to try to keep going the best i can, i have to stay off eating beef and pork, plus no soda pop, tea, or coffee due to the potassium content and caffeine. i hope this helps some of you before you get to the stage 3 kidney failure that i am going thorugh. MANY BLESSINGS TO ALL.

I have hypoglycemia and hyperkalemia due to recent kidney cancer. I am really having a difficult time with the diet, I also have to watch my potassium due to having it high already. I wasnt aware of the coffee having potassium in it,, that is my only downfall.

the diet is really hard to follow. there is only so much you can do with chicken, fish or turkey.

I am so sorry you have to go through this. My older sister is doing kidney dialysis, too. She says she wishes she had listened to the doctor and watched her diet better. btw: she was not overly overweight and exercised. she just didn't like vegetables. NOTE: a meat and potatoes diet is NOT GOOD for anyone.

This is scary…sorry you are going through it. Might be a wake-up call to other Diabetic folk. I've been diognosed over 20 yrs. The no coffee/tea is going to be rough. So basicly only water to drink. I was told 20 yrs. ago to not drink fruit juices. And try to avoid artificial sweetners.

Could you share what some of the symptoms are that are related to kidney problems? I have been diabetic for 22 years, and recently started having some major swelling in my feet, ankles and legs, and it doesn't go down much even during the night. They also hurt a lot more than they ever have…haven't seen the dr. recently, but will be going soon…

I had no symptoms other that a few UTI's then i had another complication which landed me in the hospital, and that is how they found mass on my left Kindey. Which they said I had to have at least 3 to 4 years. Turned out to be Clear Cell Carcinoma.

wow, had no idea…suffering from UTI currently, but is the first in a long time. And I seem to have lost almost all bladder control. By the time I feel the urge to go, it is almost too late…guess I am going to have to make an appointment…

swelling of hands and feet that doesnt go down and i am very tired most of the time. i dont go to the bathroom as much as i used to (can also have symptoms of going to much). i hope this will help. my dr did a 24 hr urine and the day after took blood. might not hurt to ask dr if this might be a good idea to do. many blessings to all here on this blog. helps to have someone to talk to.

all parts of my body were swollen legs, feet, stomach, vagay-gay, thighs and would not go down even when I slept. Please see a Doctor to at least slow down progression of what is going on. all prayers are with you

Bless your heart. I did not know about coffee causing problems with the kidneys. This is pretty scary since most of us love our coffee. Appreciate this heads up and you have my thoughts and prayers. God Bless you and yours.

I am so sorry to hear of the level your kidneys are suffering at. I was aware of the protein, but I was not aware that tea and coffee were issues as well. If we drink decaf coffee, does that help?

mimiof6 2011-02-08 00:02:09 -0600 Report

not even diet drinks are acceptable. i begged, because diet pepsi was all i would drink. i had a hard time trying to drink water. every once in a while i drink crystal lite,

GabbyPA 2011-02-08 08:16:18 -0600 Report

Diet doesn't equal caffeine free. If tea and coffee are decaffeinated, does that help?

GabbyPA 2011-02-09 07:35:37 -0600 Report

Oh bummer. We drink decaf now...I guess I will have to look at saying good bye to my tea. I stopped coffee a few months ago. I like herbals, so that will be an okay compromise.

i have had diabetes for over 15 years now. i will post everything i learn about the process of the disease. a lot of people that have had the disease for a short time can reverse it with diet and exersize. sure wish i would have listened when i was younger.

yolanda41 2011-02-07 20:30:56 -0600 Report

I wish I had listen to the Dr. when I was younger also. I am a kidney dialysis patient. Everything is okay, but wish I could start all over

ShawnRae 2011-02-07 18:57:20 -0600 Report

When you say people can reverse it if they've had it for a short time, can you be more specific? What is considered "short?" A few months? Less than 5 years? I'm just learning about it and was diagnosed about 3 years ago. Thanks for your help!

Anonymous 2011-02-07 19:54:49 -0600 Report

I too would like to know if this can be reversed what the time frame is. I have been going to the dr. faithfullly and they tell me once you get it you got it and it cannot be cured. So I am interested if anyone has other information.

tabby9146 2011-02-08 09:46:29 -0600 Report

count me as a third person that wants to know how short of a time you have diabetes, that it can be reversed? I was dianogsed 26 months ago, and I have no idea how long I had it, just that the doctor said it was caught 'early' I asked her how they knew it was caught early, and she said because my A1C was 5.6 and I am interested in reversing, but while I am doing real well, I have not reversed it yet. I don't "always" act strict with my diet, but most of the time and I exercise almost daily for at least 30 minutes. some days, I get 45 minutes of exercise.
