Anyone from Utah attending the American Diabetes Association EXPO Salt Lake City (though technically in Sandy at the South Towne Expo Center) this year? Who's been before?

Here's some info about it:

The American Diabetes Association's Diabetes EXPO is held on the last Saturday of February at the South Towne Expo Center.

2011 February 26, Saturday — SAVE THE DATE

The EXPO is FREE and includes health screenings, cooking demonstrations, product and service exhibitors, as well as leading experts talking about diabetes management and prevention. Get the latest information on preventing and managing diabetes and its deadly complications to help keep you and your family healthy.

Pre-register at http://diabetes.org/saltlakecityexpo

Joyce Ellis says, "Diabetes Expo is always a lot of fun. My whole family volunteers because we think it is so important to make the wealth of information that is there available to everyone. It is a great place to learn about new information and new products. I have been attending the Diabetes Expo since I was diagnosed 5 years ago and I learn something new every year."

Libby Arias says, "Expo was my first experience with the ADA after my daughter was diagnosed 9 years. I was so relieved to find everything I needed under one roof. At the time it seemed like a miracle. We've never missed an Expo and every year we learn and gain something new."

What about you?

Thanks everyone.

Salt Lake Tribune did a brief write up about Expo. Check it out:

"Gail Miller, wife of the late Larry H. Miller, who died from diabetes-related complications, will speak at 11 a.m. Other speakers include Sean Busby, a professional snowboarder who has [type 1] diabetes; Libery Afeaki, Miss Tonga Utah; and Burgandy Keel, a “Biggest Loser” contestant from Eagle Mountain."

For those not familiar with Utah or the Utah Jazz, here's a write up about Larry Miller: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/nba...

Sorry it's a sad story, but it has helped some people in our community be more proactive about managing and preventing diabetes. For example,

We're grateful to his family for their efforts to prevent diabetes and its complications in the community.

Yes, this is sad, but you are right, it brings to light what a detrimental disease this can be. Sometimes we need those wake up calls to remind us that we have to do things for ourselves.

I through this little video/slideshow together with Sean Busby's news about speaking at Utah's Expo this year — http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=150...

Anyone met him before?

Very nice! I didn't know you were famous! How cool is that. You will have to share your presentation with us.

Sorry! Didn't realize my name wasn't totally clear. I'm Grant, but I'm helping promote Sean's presentation! =)

Oh, well, rubbing elbows with fame is just as good. Still would like to see the presentation.

That would be awesome. I bet you are getting all excited about the expo. I hope it goes well and is well attended.

It's a great event! I always get to meet new people and it's a fantastic to meet others going through the same things that I am. Although this year we're hoping Animas/Dexcom will officially be synched so we can get my (T1) husband on it. The favorite of our family last year? The dog and trainer that trains dogs to detect low blood sugars. That dog got LOT'S of attention and belly rubs from us!

I'm hoping that once the medical mart is finally open here that the ADA will have an expo in Cleveland. Seems odd they don't considering the amount of top rated healthcare systems here.

We need one in Florida. Come on down, the weather is nice! LOL. I go to an independence expo with my hubby, but I have yet to see any kind of diabetic one for me. I would love to attend one. I'd love to come to Utah to go...but not this year.

We were down in Miami and the Keys a year ago actually! What an awesome trip! Even though there were record cold temperatures, it was still warmer than Utah!! =)

I wonder if some of the diabetes orgs I'm aware of are active in your area. I'll send you a direct message with some ideas, but if you can make it to you Utah sometime, we'd be glad to have you! We've had 4,000-5,000 people at the last two year's Expos. A lot of energy and people connecting with each other, learning more about diabetes. So good!

Wow, that is huge. I can't imagine all the great information that is floating around there. My hubby and I are planning a trip out west this year in the late spring. Utah is on my list of places to see. I have not seen very much of that beautiful state, but I sure would like to. I would love to hook up if the expo is in this part of the country. I just need a little more advanced warning. Gotta save those pennies.

I did a little searching for Floridian diabetes orgs that might have events closer to you and I found a couple that should be a good start:

Here's the list of ADA offices. Call the one closest to you to see what they have going in your area:

Here's the Florida Diabetes Prevention and Control Program at the Florida Department of Health. They have a statwide alliance for prevention and care and should be able to connect you with resources closer to home.

Let me know how it goes!

Late spring is a bit quiet in our diabetes community overall, but I'll keep my eyes open for you.

This sounds like a great expo, wish I could be there. I know it would be fun and educational to us all. Thanks for sharing info.

UtahDiabetes 2011-01-26 16:43:37 -0600 Report

Thanks, MewElla. It would be great to have you come, but I'll try to post some info from it here. Not as good as being there, but I hope it helps!
