Right, theres more disadvantages to this condition then advantages but i know i have used the oul 'oh no, my sugars are low ' excuse to get me out of something i dont want to do!!! its cheeky i know but works a treat when the right occasion comes along!! I ll give u an example!!

The other day i was out shopping with my mam and after 2 long long hours of going round the shops lookin at the repetitive clothing line i finaly had enough!! Before i could say anything to my shopaholic mother she says right, will we head next door to have a look at the clothes in there?

Straight away i said ' actually im feeling on the low side, we should go for lunch now !!!' Now thats using your condition to your advantage!!! i used to do the same thing in school !! maths was never my favorite subject so as soon as the teacher would come in i would wave my glucose kit at him and head out the door with a bottle of coke in my hand!!!

Its like that episode of scrubs where Turk would use his 'blood sugar is dippin' excuse so he could score a cookie or a sandwich!!!

So has any of you done the same thing?? share your stories, and before you all jump down my neck im not encouraging any of you young diabetics to skip classes- school is cool but the oul 'my sugars dippin' has scored me plenty of free cookies in the past!!!

I learned to use it in restaurants that I like BUT ARE VERY SLOW with their service…NEVER FEEL GUILTY because my blood sugar will drop if I wait for their usual service

As far as some food goes, it is a great way of getting out of eating something you don't really want anyway. I have used that.

Danni-the-diabetic 2011-01-24 11:21:59 -0600 Report

Yep! I've done that too LOL I hate to say it, but I think I have used every excuse in the book when I was younger.

roshy 2011-01-24 16:32:26 -0600 Report

I think its really funny the things you used to do to get away with stuff when u were a younger diabetic!!!

I remember going to the doctors with my 'perfect' blood sugars written into my diary!! then the result for the H1a1c would come back sky high around 14!! when the doctor asks to see the meter id have at least fifty excuses in which i didnt have it with me!!!

"well ya see, Dr. i was in a rush to the hospital cos the dog ran outa the house and i had to chase him down the road for a half hour and when i finialy got him back inside i realised i was late and grabbed my diary but completely forgot the meter!!"

if only i realised i wasnt the only teen diabetic who tried to pull that one before!! i never thoght to think he was a doctor cos he was some what intelligent!!
This behavour has WHEN DIABETICS GO BAD!! written all over it!!

Yeah, I learned my lessons and I'm not sure if I am a believer in karma, but things sure have gotten back at me and kicked me in the butt in alot of directions, but all I can say is, 'I deserve that' or 'should have seen that coming!'

Great minds think alike! But I rarely have the low problem. So if neccessary I fall back on the Asthma or Arthritis. LOL

If I go to a party or some sort of gathering that includes food and I am not in the mood to eat (I have major food issues) I have a tendency to use the line "that stuff is sooo bad for my glucose readings" or "I love that stuff, but my metformin hates it." They offer cake with way too much frosting on it . . . "Sorry I can't. I have diabetes." Sometimes using your illness as an excuse to get out of something is ok. Now if I could only find a way to use diabetes to get out of doing the dishes (I live alone so no one to do the dishes for me).

I have used it several times, although I haven't done it in awhile. I did it at school and I remember once I called out of work saying that it was too high and I was getting sick. LOL I remember one time I was in this awkward situation with this guy and I couldn't think of any other way to get out of it except for saying my sugar was low and I had to get some juice. And I saw that episode of Scrubs, I love that show.

GabbyPA 2011-01-22 19:52:27 -0600 Report

I have not used it, but my husband has! LOL

Actually, I saw a video one time of a lady who pitched a fit in a deli to get ahead in the line. OMG, what a horrible ambassador for the disease. I mean, it's one thing to use it quietly, but man, she was yelling and screaming...it was scary.

I haven't done this all. If I don't feel like doing something or if I am tired of walking around shopping I just so. There have been a times when my sugar did drop and I had to go eat something, but it was true when I said it. I am not putting you down, so don't think that. I just don't see the reason to use the diabetes to get out of something.

I've never thought of such a thing. How clever and when I think of thing I could have gotten out of - Oh my!

roshy 2011-01-22 11:48:03 -0600 Report

you can use it but dont tell anyone who told ya bout this!! i dont want any angry emails saying im a bad influence on their diabetics!!!

oldbuttercup 2011-01-22 07:39:51 -0600 Report

My wife has told people in the past that my sugar is low or I'm not feeling well to get out us of engagements we don't want to go to. I have told her I don't feel well to get her to take care of herself better. She is so busy worrying about me, she doesn' t watch her own health as much as I'd like.
Want to go on a impossibly long, boring shopping spree anyone?
I see the sign post up ahead.
Next stop The Twilight Zone!

I personally have not, but my bride had, and had encouraged me to pull that little trick to get the social security worker to hurry up and see me. I rarely have lows, so I won't cry "wolf" if I don't need to.

Harlen 2011-01-21 22:59:43 -0600 Report
