I just found out yesterday that I have diabetes. I do not have health insurance and I want to know if there is anything I can do to stay healthy without medications.

Hi and welcome to DC family. Did doctor give you your results of your diabetes test. Need to know your numbers it would help also you can try diet and excrise and losing weight can help keep your diabetes in control without meds. You need to lower your carb intake and eat more vegs and fish and chicken and turkey and limit your food intake to portion size meals

I can relate really well to this, I was just diagnosed in December and have no job or insurance and nothing on the horizon at this point. However my doctors have helped me to get a glucometer by working with the drug company for a reduced rate for both the meter and strips, I only get enough for one test a day but it's better than nothing at all. I also make sure to buy all my meds at wal-mart where they have a $4 prescription program, I believe Rite-aid has one of these too.

I am going to do my best to try to work on going off meds if I can but until then wal-mart is my go to pharmacy because it's where I can afford to get everything I need.

I have to agree with realsis77, though, check out your health department and the department of human services, they should have something that can help you afford what you need. As with mine you may be limited but my plan is to try to buy some extra test strips along with my own money to help supplement what the company will help me with so I can keep a tighter control on my BS.

Hi. I would go to the department of human services in your state and apply for state covered insurance. They can help with doctors visits and meds or insulin if you need it. I've recently been diagnosed and I need both meds and two different kinds of insulin! Sometimes diet alone is not enough! Id look into the department of human services right away so you can get the treatment you need! I wish you the best!
