I use 2 different insulin pens a day. I have a question for others out there…When you get to the end (taking the last dose) in the pen and you have left over insulin in the pen.

Do you save the remaining insulin to use for the next time you need to inject yourself, plus the use of the new pen?

So actually you are giving yourself two shots?

re1ndeer I also use 2 insulin pens and after 28 days I throw them out but if I had to use them I would at least till the pen dont have enogh to dispende 55 units of Latus and the 5 units of humalog. If you do use it dont worry it wont harm you.

Does anyone out there use a pump? I am going to start one soon and would
like some feed back.

I do not, but you can search for discussions by clicking on the discussions link on the left, then enter a search term (in this case "Insulin pumps" ) and you should get several pages of discussions for and by "pumpers".

I had thought of going to a pump, but don't know if insurance would cover it.
Also, I haven't yet discussed this with my doctor. It sure would be alot easier, than giving shots all day.

Yes! My Lantus pen cartridge has at least 12 to 15 units left in it when it won't let me dial up any more units. What I've been doing is using an insulin syringe (left over from before I used the pens) and draw out as much of the remaining insulin in the cartridge before I throw away the cartridge. Then I inject with the syringe. Then I throw away the syringe. Sometimes I have enough for my entire Lantus dose. If I don't, I then use a new Lantus cartidge/pen, use a new needle and give myself the balance of the dose…yeah, it may be two shots vs one, but I feel I'm not wasting my insulin. Over the course of a year, by doing this, I figure I'm gaining at least one whole cartridge/pen. I guess my Yankee roots are showing…there's an old Yankee motto: Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do or do without…unfortunately, we can't do without the insulin, so I'm maxing my supply.

Gee that was one of my dad's mottoes, and he was a native Buckeye (Ohio resident)

I consider that a Yankee! (but don't tell your dad that- LOL)

He already knows. He's been in heaven since 1972 when I was 19, so I can't tell him anything. (Couldn't when he was here either - a hard headed German.)

Thats what I do. Use up the last dose in one and if it isn't enough, use a second one. Inject until the pen won't let you!

Do you use a new needle, or use the one you had used with the first pen?

I switch the needle.

May I ask, what type or brand of pen you use? I normally have to prime my pens at least 3 times before use.

I also have to prime my pens at least two times before using the new pens. When I prime them I feel like its a waist of insulin.

You may feel like your wasting the insulin, but it's better then injecting air into your body and possibly causing an abcess.

Right now I use a humapen luxura for humalog and a solostar for lantus. In the past I've used the flexpen for novolog and the humalog pen abandons kwikpen for humalog. the only time I have to prime multiple times is with the luxura when I switch cartridges.
