Oatmeal is good, I eat it every day. However it can also be a disaster for diabetics. I had to drastically change the type, amount and preparation of it to stop me spiking high after eating it.
I use regular oatmeal, no flavors or microwave kind. The kind you have to cook on stove, i add a little Promise butter and some brown sugar Splenda and my grinder cinnamon. I would say it is about a cups worth when done. I have not had any spikes or trouble with highs. I probably eat it about 3 times a week. I have not had it for a snack yet.
Breakfast is notoriously hard for diabetics so you're very lucky to be able to eat such a large portion with no spike. I'm not so lucky unfortunately.
I had to switch from plain old fashioned cooked on the stove to a microwavable flavored kind that has a smaller portion. Now I get decent numbers after eating it (110-130) whereas the other I tried I would go up to 170-200. Before I settled I tried..3/4 cup old fashioned made with 50/50 milk and water and 100% water. 1/2 cup old fashioned with 50/50 water and milk and 100% water. 3/4 instant with 50/50 milk and water and 100% water. 1/2 cup instant with 50/50 milk and water and 100% water. All of those I tried on the stove and in the microwave. Various pre-packaged instants like quaker, some with a blend of sugar and sweetners some with just sugar. The one I settled on is the Target Archer Farms strawberry creme. 30g of carb and does me nicely.
Well I figured out a long time ago, that being diabetic is all about finding a balance that works for you. What I do will not work for others and what you do will not work for me. Keep on keeping on track.
I love the Strawberry Creame Oatmeal and it works really well for me. I use to eat an egg every morning and it ran my cholesterol up, so i slowed down on the eggs and started eating oatmeal. It helped my sugar and cholesterol and i felt better too.
kdroberts, have you tried the Whole Grain Oatmeal from Sturm's? No sugar added, 120 Cal, 22g total carb, 6g fiber, 4g protein. 1 packet is 36g. Smaller than the others, but it does not bring my sugar up that much. I buy it from Walmart, blueberry and cranberry flavors. And it tastes good too. And the others i'm using is Lower sugar from Quaker, and steel cut oatmeal.
My doctor swears by oatmeal. For breakfast, snacks and everything.
