My mom has always told me that denying something you really want just makes you want it more. She was so right. I kept complaining that I wanted a DQ turtle waffle sundae - she finally told me to go get one - guess what I only ate maybe half and I was done with it! LOL mom is right! There is nothing wrong with a little so long as it is a little. When I was first diagnosed, I quit baking everything, much to everyone's distress (my family can still eat them as well as my co-workers). I found that I tried to find something else to occupy my time, but nothing was as relaxing and rewarding. Well almost two years later, I'm back to baking when I want, it never was about eating it.

Due to the storm we had yesterday, my family could not come for the Christmas Brunch. All the baked goods for the brunch weren't baked yet but…all the Christmas cookies were. To avoid temptation I went neighbor to neighbor in my condo building with Christmas greetings and cookies for them to enjoy with the Eagles game. Well the Eagles got postpone til Tues but I'm sure the cookies were eaten.

I have to confess, I get one from each batch. I have to make sure they are acceptable for the rest of the family lol.

That is my husband's job. He says he has to make sure all my baking is suitable for consumption...by the 3 or 4th cookie, I think I pass. LOL

I thought of the idea years ago in an effort to "have my cake & eat it too" but not gain weight as I was already obese. In all my jobs I worked with kids. So in an effort to have a treat now & then I would make whatever I had the craving for, then take the rest into work & treat the kids. That way it wouldn't be in the house for days & days. Kids are always down for baked goods. The one good thing that came from my emergency hernia surgery was I lost 75 lbs. Well not the only thing. Because I lost all that weight & was eating super healthy. My hypertension & cholesterol are now in check to the point that I no longer have to take meds for them.

LOL Harlen....I can see you drifting through the air with your nose following the smell of that sweet yummy.

That is when I find going to a party or handing it off to my neighbors works really well. Why are you alone this Christmas?? Don't mean to pry, but you have a wife and daughter...right?

Oh, I see! I totally understand that. Marriage into families can be a rough road. I have to say there are a few in mine that I might not want to be trapped with for any extended length of time myself. So that was your secret Christmas present. No Rules!! Very nice....LOL

I do not think I would be brave enough to make Baklava. It is the ultimate food of perfection. Just reading that you made it must have raised my BG. It would not survive an hour alone with me. I have not tried one piece of it since I was told I have diabetes.

Harlen 2010-12-26 13:06:40 -0600 Report

I have benn so good I only have had three small ones lol

I am glad you have self control and have been able to enjoy your treat. Even before diabetes I figured it would not be safe to have a pan of Baklava and myself alone in the same room. Now it would be an even worse scenario.

I dont like taking shots and for every pice I have I need to take a shot
this helps me a lot lol

jayabee52 2010-12-25 19:36:41 -0600 Report

You want some help with that? Lol! Baklava is a fave of mine too. But there are certain German Christmas cookies like Lebkuchen & springerlich, & Anise seed cutouts that do it for me at Christmastime. And then there's the Honey molasses cutout cookies that mom used to make. She had to hide them when I was a boy to let them age & soften a bit. I usually found them and at many of them. Sometimes she had to make a whole new batch. I don't have the recipe. Gonna have to get it from Mom so I can pass it along to my sons.

Harlen 2010-12-25 20:00:02 -0600 Report

I would like a coppy of them too lol
