I was posting on another discussion and this idea popped into my head. I am going to make a diabetes job jar. You know, like the ones your mom used to put your chores in. I am going to put cards in it that will have me do that little extra that day. It should be interesting.

Things like:

Walk 10 extra minutes
Eat a salad for dinner
Try a new low carb recipe
Test after my meals
Run in place for 10 minutes
Try a new exercise
Swim two more laps
Go to a movie with a friend
Abstain from (insert food) for the week
Pamper my feet

Please add your ideas. There are tons of thins we can do for ourselves every day that we know we should do. Pick a card each day and make that your goal. It can be fun, serious or even just goofy.

thats a great idea..i dunno if you already do it this way or not.have 2 jars, one labeld.to do list.other one labeld done list.take one out of to do jar and of course read it..lol.then set it in front of the done jar and leave it there untill it's done.then and only then put it into the done jar.

to list
say hi to someone you dont know.and with a smile on your face.
and as for
4. Say thank you to someone who has supported you in your life.
i beleave that applys to every day life.not only for those that have supported you in some way or other.but has done something for ya.or even have said some thing nice to you.even just being there at times deserves a thank you..
i havent made up a to do jar or what ever.i normaly go with day-to-day on what i want to do..like today.my bedroom looks like a whirlwind blew through.so im cleaning it up.which includes washing my sheets n pillow cases..pomaranian hairs gets every where when they shede..and right now, shes lossing summer hair and growing in winter hair.in a week or 2 i can have enough dog hair for a wig.lol

My sister has a lower spin problem and a bad ankle.so i went over to her home yesterday and cut some tree brances n put them on the burn pile.and planted a couple of plants for her.and ofcourse she liked that.

That is a good idea, kind of like the ACE hardware commercials...."To DOne" list. Very good.

Gabby, I LOVE this idea!! Let's gather all the idea we can from out super clever DC Pals and work on this project!! Here's my contributions:

2. Meditate for 10 minutes
3. Drink 48 oz of water while at work
4. Say thank you to someone who has supported you in your life

I'm new to the site and so I didn't see it before. But this is a great idea! I'll try it out and keep you all posted on any progress or ideas that I have.

GabbyPA 2011-05-31 23:17:10 -0500 Report

Oh my, looking at my last post here I am shocked. Where did the year go already?? I am starting to use my jar again and I hope that many of you who made them will start to use them again too. It made things interesting...in a good way. Join us!

GabbyPA 2011-01-12 18:02:21 -0600 Report

Yesterday I drew the mini road trip...and I have to save up to do that one. But today, I got the "Write a thank you card to my doctor" It is in the mailbox waiting to go out. I am having a good time doing this. I hope if you all are thinking of trying it, that you actually do. You will love it.

Dev 2011-01-09 16:43:04 -0600 Report

I love this idea. I am going to take some of the things on your list and add some more. I have never done this drawing from the jar thing before. So I am exicted.
I also like Harlen's idea of drawing a treat after you have been good for a week.
Also, Parag and I are going to make a list of things we can do together. I realised that the way our lives are going we have to plan to do things together. Drawing activities from the jar makes it a little more fun than just writing an appt with each other in a diary :)

So we might end up with 2-3 jars to draw from for various reasons. lol.

GabbyPA 2011-01-09 18:46:49 -0600 Report

That is so cool. I mix fun stuff and discipline stuff in my jar. But do it how ever it works for you. The thing is to give each day a little different thing to focus on.

Dev 2011-01-11 17:34:16 -0600 Report

Actually now I think of actually using it, it might be a good idea to mix it up. Drawing only discipline stuff might feel like a punishment after some time. I saw your photos of your diabetes task box. We have the chits. I will make something colorful to store them in. It is kind of silly but it has brought so much exicitement in my life. haha. Will post how it goes on DC.

GabbyPA 2011-01-12 18:03:34 -0600 Report

Ok, I do have to ask...what are "chits"? I was trying to figure that out, but my brain couldn't find a fit.

Dev 2011-01-12 19:26:30 -0600 Report

oh sorry for the confusion. I used it to mean 'the small pieces of paper you write something on'.
I think it comes from my British english vocabulary.
So I meant to say that I have the pieces of paper ready with tasks on them. I just need a box to store them in now.

Well, my jar is giving me all of my not so diabetic related ones of late. Today my card said "Donate unused items to our garage sale". We have a group that raises money with garage sales, so I am sure I can dig through the house and find all kinds of dust laden things to clean off and donate.

Hi Judy and welcome to the site! Good to have you here.

I am having a lot of fun with it. Today, my card was to eat salads at each meal. So I had a wonderful spinach and egg salad for breakfast, I was out with friends so I had a salad bar for lunch (no breads or croutons!!) and tonight I had a salad with our chicken dinner. That was a good challenge for me today. I will see if it paid off tonight before I go to bed.

It is a good motivation and I hope you put a whole jar together for yourself to keep that motivation going.

Typing all in caps is hard to read and is considered shouting. Take that caps lock off! Nice to meet you, by the way

GabbyPA 2011-01-09 13:47:53 -0600 Report

Good for you! Today my card was "Jog in place during commercials for a 1 hour show" This will be a good one for me for sure!

GabbyPA 2011-01-06 21:07:50 -0600 Report

Today, my jar card was: "Prepare a meal for a neighbor or a friend". We have 2 elderly neighbors that I am fond of so I made each of them a meal of chicken casserole, salad and home made cranberry muffins. They were both very appreciative and it made me feel good. My husband and I delivered them.

MewElla 2011-01-09 09:51:30 -0600 Report

What a thoughtful thing to do. Isn't this the way we should all strive to live? God Bless you and your family.

GabbyPA 2011-01-09 13:47:17 -0600 Report

Thank you. Yes, you are right. If we all lived like this the world around us would be more filled with caring and love.

DJackson33 2011-01-06 11:38:00 -0600 Report

Okay, I like that. I live in Washington, DC. I need all the encouragement in the world to get this diabetes under control.

GabbyPA 2011-01-04 08:09:37 -0600 Report

Well, I made my jar today. Well, actually, it ended up being a box. I put about 30 different things in it for me to do. Some are for a day, some are for a week. I posted the photos of it on my profile if you want to take a look. This should be fun. Today, my pick was "Dance for exercise today" So I will be dancing around like a goofy fool. But it's okay.

CaliKo 2011-01-04 12:06:27 -0600 Report

Good idea!
How about…

Make a dish with salmon or tuna
Take my blood pressure
Go to the library (walk if you are close)
Visit a farmer's market
Make a healthy dish x 2 and take one to a shut-in
Take old magazines or books to a dialysis clinic
Call a relative you haven't spoken to this year
Check out a book on stretching
Take a nap, or at least rest for 30 minutes
Invite a friend over for coffee and company
Clean out a closet
Take old (too big) clothes to a favorite charity
Take old DVDs to a buy-back store and find a new movie
Find a different park and take a long walk
Make a list of your favorite reasons to like the current season or month
Take a calendar and write the birthdays of your loved ones, or other events you want to remember
Type up a favorite recipe for DC (okay, now I'm being self-serving!)

cavie2 2012-02-04 05:15:00 -0600 Report

Ok, Caliko what is a shut-in? Have never heard of that before.

CaliKo 2012-02-04 06:50:06 -0600 Report

Hi Cavie2, A Shut-in is someone who can't get around, doesn't drive, usually confined to the house. Often elderly or disabled.

Please give me a healthy recipe for my family that is tasty and can help control my type 2 diabetes.

GabbyPA 2011-01-06 21:05:49 -0600 Report

Visit our recipe section. There are tons of them there. Or better yet, go to the tab "21 Days Guide" and there you get a recipe for each day. I made one of the salads yesterday and it was great.

GabbyPA 2011-01-05 07:07:40 -0600 Report

You know it's funny, about half of your list ended up in my box. I will have to add the ones that are not in there yet. The one I drew today is "Relax today, do something fun" So my hubby and I are going to go out today to try a new restaurant called the Tilted Kilt.

PS - Here's one more, just for you:
Start planning my big 5-0 bash!
(we had a big octoberfest-style 5-0 party for my hubbie last year)

GabbyPA 2011-01-05 17:43:55 -0600 Report

That is what our trip is. We are planning a trip out west to celebrate our 50th birthdays and our 10th year anniversary. It will be all balled up into one. Should be a blast.

GabbyPA 2011-01-06 21:15:51 -0600 Report

We ended up going to the mall instead and getting a pair of shoes for me to walk in. Much better use of our money! LOL

CaliKo 2011-01-07 09:36:08 -0600 Report

I need to do that soon. I read "Born to Run" and I want to get some of those gloves for feet that are a lot like barefoot running, but offer the feet some protection. Probably not recommended for diabetics, but I'd like to try them when the weather warms up. Wish I had a beach to run on!

Very cool Idea! I love it!

GabbyPA 2010-12-26 23:10:24 -0600 Report

So what would you add to your jar? I am looking for more ideas of slips to put in my jar. I want it to be full of all kinds of ideas so that I will be excited to do it. I was thinking of some more:

Measure all my food
Watch a movie to make me laugh
Call a DC member
Make a new goal
Celebrate my diabetes
Send a thank you card to my doctor

There are all kinds of things...I would love to hear more ideas from you guys. I have picked my jar out, and now I am making my cards.

Edie 2011-01-05 08:47:33 -0600 Report

Could we see your whole list for your box please and then I can post some suggestions of my own that might not be in there?

Ok, besides the ones listed here in other posts, I have added to my jar:

Go Swimming 2 days this week
Preform random acts of kindness
Test at 3:00 am
Do interval training 3 days this week
Do upper body exercise this week
Log everything for one week
Clean the house and dance while you do it
Save $5.00 today
Take a mini road trip this week
Try something new I have never done before
Jog in place during commercials for a 1 hour show
Send an anonymous gift or card
Work outside today (unless it's raining)
Go for an extra walk today
Do my Tia-Chi DVD this week
Drink 1 more bottle of water
Pay something forward
Send someone from DC a card of encouragement

That is what is in my job jar so far. It is filling up, but that gives me a nice variety of things to do.

That's a good idea! Right now I kinda go Harlen's route but once a month as long as I've done well I'll bake a special treat.

Harlen 2010-12-23 13:12:52 -0600 Report

Tharts so sweet Gabby
What I do is flip it and if I have done every thing right all week I get to pick a slip and in the jare are all the things I stey away from
1. a slice of cheese cake and a 20 min walk
2. one extra tbs of dressing and a 5 min walk
It adds up to a treet and a little work out I just can not have one with out the other.
But like I sed I need to have done well all week lol
Best wishes

Edie 2011-01-05 08:46:28 -0600 Report

I love all of the ideas on here and will use what both you and Harlen suggest. It is great

I put on my Frig a list of things I can't have till my numbers are below 200 and then if they go up very high they go onto my list of must stay away from till I get below 150. So far Cake and Ice Cream are on the list. Sent my sugar up over 300 one night. 325 to be exact. Not good but I love the idea of treats not food ones only though. That will give me two jars to use from. Thanks Guys
