Sugar has been around since ancient times. I believe it was the Greeks who would diagnose it by seeing if ants were drawn to the sugar laden urine of the patient. I don't know what they did for treating it. Like many diseases, I'm sure it was misdiagnosed through the years. I do doubt, however, that there have ever been so many people who suffer with the affliction of "sugar" as now. I would also rather imagine that type 1 was the predominant type until recently.

We have a member here who has had type one for 64 years. Richard could tell you more of the current evolution of the disease and treatment. He wrote a book that he sells a book on that chronicles his years with this disease. You might want to check it out.

Hi I do know this disease has been around for centuries! I do not know the origin. In ancient times they would have (THIS IS AWFUL BUT TRUE) urine tasters that would taste urine to detect the presence of sugar.I read this in one of my diabetics books! So yeah, this disease has been around a very long time!

Another method was to place a small container with urine in it outside and wait to see if any ants, or bee's would come around it due to the sweetness
(expelled glucose).
