What type am I? I have been a diabetic for 4+ years now. I was diagnosed on my 40th birthday. My diagnosis was originally TYP II. Cool, I now know what is going on with me.
As life continued, I quickly progressed from literally Diet and Exercise (about 1 year) to oral meds (about 2 years) and now in Lantus and Novolog.
With all but one of the criteria met, It was “suggested” by my PCM that I am a TYPE 1.5 or LADA. Sorry, LADA for those that are unaware is Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults.
Well, I got schooled by my Endocrinologist; She informed me that in the past you had the following labels:
Juvenile Diabetes, Adult Onset Diabetes/Type 1, Type 2/Type 1.5, LADA.
Her final word about all of the names and types: [in a very heavy Indian accent] “You have diabetes. Type does not matter. All that matters is Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM) or Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM).”
What is the actual proper terminology or is it just up to the Dr. to make it up as you go along?
