my son's bs was 210 at dinner time he had some flavored water with his dinner. At bedtime it dropped to 27. I was just wandering if the flavored water acts the same as regular water does ?

I have always been told that water does help lower the BS. When I was Diagnosed they had me drink 2L of water an hour and also had me on a Saline Drip (1 Bag an hour) to help bring me down. He obviously didnt have that much of the sparkling water but yes it does work the same.

Even water shouldn't do that. Something else is going on. Did he exercise a lot or does he tend to crash to a low after a high reading?

He was pretty much laid back yesterday, he dropped low during thanksgiving but he was very active that afternoon, but it wasn't a dramitic drop ,last nite was the first time it dropped so low , his nurse thinks it could be that his ratio for supper needed to be adjusted so they changed it fron 1:15 to 1:20. going to give that a try .

well yesterday was a pretty good day !!! And things started off good today, but by lunch time he dropped his bs dropped to 50, gave him 4 oz of grape juice . and the short time that i had my back turned he grabbed his lunch and took off with it before i could recheck him little booger lol. so it spiked on him this evening it was 375. just did his last reading for the night and it was 73. I do have a question, is it ok to give him like tylenol or motrin ? H e was complaining this morning about his leg cramping so I rubbed it till it quite wasn't for sure if he could have any or not.

That would be a question for the doctor. I use Tylenol products myself, but kids are something I have no experience with and I would ask. Or even the pharmacist, they are a wealth of information that we don't take advantage of enough.

yes, it is possible depending on what he ate that he may have gotten too much insulin. also, depending on how long it was between his dinner and bedtime, so much can play on blood sugar readings, stress, activity…Weird but on Thanksgiving we tested my 10 yr old daughter before dinner and she freaked out and showed me the meter which just said HI. So, instead of panicing (Which i would have normally done..lol) I had her retest again, watching her this time, and it showed 322. I have had that problem before with other moniters. The batteries were fine so I dont know what happend. I just usually now, will have her test twice when we get really hi or low readings.
also, the water thing. I never knew about it until my daughters school nurse told me. Sometimes, she will drop from 220 to 100 with 1 bottle of water.

I've had similar things happen with me too. Sometimes something sweet gets on the fingertips and can throw the readings off. Usually I wash my fingers again and retest. Good for you that you didn't panic.

Ok, that sounds like the issue. Too much insulin along with low carb meals can be a bad mix. That is why it's so important to count the carbs accurately.

He's done good today getting ready to do his last reading for the night so fingers crossed we get a good result. He's a very picky eater so it's also hard to keep his carb intake consestant through the day.

Do you have a bottle or package which has the nutritional information for the flavored water? That should tell you what you want to know.

27 is mighty scarey.

It's bottle, it says zero all the way down the label. It's the sparkling water,I have the big bottles so he only got 1//2 a glass . Yeah it was scarey he's never dropped that low , I got it back up to 125 and did another check @ 4:00 this morning and it was 98 ,but going to give his doctor a call this morning. thanks for the help.
