Hello, Im new to this site and have been around a couple of other sites for the last couple of years. I was diognosed with diabetied in May 2008, 2 months later my oldest sister died from complications of diabeties and she was ravaged with eyes ,heart, strokes and kidneys. I am a colon cancer survivor since MAY 2006. My youngest son, who is now 24 made a comment that I had to ponder but realized he was trying to make lighten the moment. He said that "WOW", first cancer then his mom with breast cancer, he said look at the genes you guys are passing on to us. I responded by telling him that since my cancer treatment caused me to put on 30 lbs that he better get busy because he has some big genes to fill when I am gone. He is a fit 30" waist, goes to the gym and runs marathons. He doesnt really make me out to be a poor gene pool but I think it has made all four of my sons know that living healthy is a neccessity. I tell them that if they have learned from my health then one of my goals for my family has been met, their good health. Since diabeties runs rampid on both sides of my family and in fact my grandmother died while in a diabetice coma, it never did get talked about in our family but no one in our family of 8 kids was diognosed until later in adult life. As life stands right now, I dont want to dwell on what might have been because there is still alot to be done but to take "what is" and learn from it but also to teach my grandkids and sons as I learn.
