Carbs vs. Net Carbs

I'm not clear on this topic. I read that you subtract the dietary fiber carbs from simple carbs and that is the amount you count for your intake. Example - total carbs on the package is 16g and dietary fiber 13g Do I subtract 13g from 16g and only count 3g??

I learned the same thing as Grammpa Gib. In the class the nutritionist said you can only subtract the fiber grams if it is 5 or more grams.

IF the fiber grams per serving is greater than 5, divide in half and subtract that number from total carbs. Just covered in a educational class.

For me I cant take away more then 5 carbs from a high fiber snak if I take away more then 5 my BS will go up.
