I was diagnosed last year with Type 1 when I was 25 years old. 140lbs at the diagnosis and within a month jumped to 180 when I started taking insulin. I have quickly learned a lot about Diabetes, but it is extremely complicated! Some weird things I can't figure out.
-Popcorn _ When ever I go to the movies and get popcorn, I take the appropriate amount of insulin/carbs but never ever get it right. Same thing with tortilla chips. Anybody else have this issue? I asked my endo and a CDE/Dietician and they just looked at me like I was crazy.
Also, does anybody have an Endo that has Type 1 Diabetes themselves? I would absolutely love to hear that this exists. I am in Nashville TN and I have asked the JDRF here if they knew any in town but they didn't know of anyone.

lol. popcorn sucks a lot for me too, but its not as bad as it is for you i think. i have to do way more insulin than i should before i eat it but i have what i need to do down now so im ok with it. it might just be someting that ur body doesnt like for god knows why. i for one cannot have milkshakes no matter how much insulin i take. i could take the amount of insulin equivalent for like 2000 calories and my sugars will skyrocket super fast. actually all of my diabetic friends have one thing which is a huge nono for them. i have a few friends who cant eat pizza.. ever, some who cant do regular pop even if low, and one who cannot have pepsi, although coke is fine… really weird i know. you'll figure it out eventually. i have been diabetic since age three, so now i more or less know exactly what to take for everything by just looking at it… although that took me a long time to be able to do.

Wow thanks Lisa, I am so glad to hear someone out there has the same issue I have. Yeah, I get low pretty soon after and it does sound like it's the fiber. I'm going to bring that up to my Endo and friend who's a dietitian and maybe they can confirm and spread the word to others. Yeah, I am on a search now for an endo with Diabetes. My Dad has Type 2 and his endo in CT is Type 1 and I am very jealous. I am moving soon so I'll check out what the scene of endos looks like in Dallas.
Thanks again,

Hi Ryan,
I've had type 1 for 43 years now, and popcorn is my bane as well! I think it's because it has just enough fiber to make it absorbed slowly, so the sugar spikes later than your insulin does. Do you go a bit low either right after eating it, or a long time after? That would show your body is absorbing it slowly like a fiber.

I've only had three endos in all these years, and none were diabetic! Sounds like a good calling for some youngsters out there!

Hi! I'm not a type 1 but my sister was from age 6. She passed away 2 years ago from complication of it. Now I fight the battle of type 2. There are many members here at DC with type 1. I'm no expert but popcorn at the movies is loaded with butter which is not good for you. Tortilla chips probably have more salt than you should have. I have no answer for your other question. But someone will have an answer for you. Welcome to DC.
