Good to have a long time "lurker" out on the site. Great to have you here and we are glad you popped in.

A 6.6 is not too bad at all. Like KD said, there are many factors that go into that such as if you have many lows between the tests. Or if you give blood on a regular basis. There are other factors such as stress and illness that can make those numbers flux, but a 6.6 is going in the right direction.

It depends on who you ask. The American Diabetes Association and others say under 7.0 is good, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and others say under 6.5 and some others say under 6.0 and some say under 5.5.

It's a tough question to answer because a few things play into the A1c result and not all are related to diabetes. There are also no really good, long term studies into having a low A1c without relying heavily on medications.

I believe the "new" ideal for an a1c is under 7.0 according to the American Diabetes Association. The best ideal for you is your best and not rating on a scale by any person or organization. I am a 6.4-6.5 and my doctor is thrilled but he's more concerned with my weight than I am. I am 5'11 and 179-182 pounds. Should I fit into the "normal" range on an insurance chart scale or be happy with my mind, body and soul??? I was thinking that moving to Jupiter would help my doctor feel better about my weight since I am down by 23 pounds since January. In my opinion, 6.6 is not bad unless you're doing nothing to achieve it. Strive to be your best with mind, body and soul … and you'll have the answer that it's either phenomenal or pathetic. Look at the inside instead of the outside and you'll get the answer.

Howdy and welcome to DC, Lady!

So that was YOU lurking in the shadows here! LoL!

Glad you figured it was safe to join the madness here.

Regarding your A1c of reading of 6.6, It kinda depends on where you had been, and where you want to be. What had your A1c been when you were 1st Dx'd? If your 6.6 is lower than your 1st A1c reading then it is fantastic!

In my case, 6.6 would be horrible because my last A1c had been 6.2, and I would be going the wrong way!

Our goal as PWDs (persons with diabetes) is to get the Aic down in the 4 or 5 range if we can. So for you 6.6 is decent, but you do have a job ahead of you to get it lower, and once it's down to keep it there.

And thank you for accepting my friend request. Now we can email one another on the DC email system should you have a question that you don't want broadcast to the whole DC board. Of course, questions are encouraged on the boards because everyone has a chance to learn from the question and their answers. I know I have benefitted from the Q&A here greatly.

I pray God's blessings upon you and yours,
and I hope to see ya around the boards
