Hello, I am new on here but here is my story. I was diagnosed w/type 2 diabetes this year back in April. Freaked me out!! I was put on Metformin 500mg once a day. I started testing my blood sugar 2xs a day and saw a nurse/nutritionist for about a month. My doctor and all the information about how high blood sugar can damage just about every organ you have scared me into immediate action. I stopped eating everything that was obvious sugar and scaled it down to the basics like chicken, fish, veges and lots of salads for lunch. I started walking 30minutes a day 3 days a week, then stepped it up to 2xs a day for awhile, sometimes I do it just once and no less than 3xs a week. Well since April I have lost 50lbs. My blood sugar is in the normal range and I may get to come off the medication. I attribute my sucess to walking!!!! It is the best excersise you can do!!!! I know that if I wasn't excersing (walking) I would not have had such sucess. Cuz over the years say the past 15yrs I have been overweight I tried all kinds of fad diets none of them ever worked because the key to the sucess is to change your lifestyle. I know in the past I may have tried to excersise but my reasons then were just to look good. But when I got diagnosed w/diabetes, I changed my lifestyle for my health and I just keep doing it (walking) because it totally makes my blood sugar normal! The benefits are huge!!!! So I testify to the fact that walking will make a difference for you! It's like you've always known…the key is DIET and Excersise. No magic pills, just good old get busy time!!!! I hope this helps someone to get up today and say…THAT'S IT, I am getting a move on~! Just put your tunes on and get to steppin!!!!

Cool! I have actually been thinking about doing that as well in order to take it to the next level. Do you like the aerobics? I was thinking about some type of cardio and toning excercise.

This is a great thing to share. Walking is a great way to get things rolling. Even if you do other things, there is nothing like walking and just being with your own thoughts for a while (well, that is for most of us, LOL) I have a dog that goes with me and as long as the kitties don't thumb their noses at us, we have a great time.

I have two dogs, but they won't just walk with me cuz they have to stop and sniff every bush that there is along the way and sometimes they go in different directions!

When I had two dogs that was the case. One was a hound and he hunted every second of the day. We sadly, had to put him down, so now I am down to one and it is manageable. She walks, sniffs a little, but I don't have to stop to drag her and she just catches up with me. I am really enjoying our nightly trips.

Welcome to DC. Congrats on the great results. I agree with you about walking being so good as an exercise. Walking has helped me lose about the same amount of weight this year. Even during the times I couldn't do it for 30 minutes, I still tried for whatever amount of time I could tolerate. Some days it might have been only 5 minutes but at least I was able to do that much. We all need to do what we are able to do, the reward of better diabetes control s worth it.
