Insulin or oral meds?

Can anyone tell me how a doctor decides who go's on insulin or takes oral meds. My husbands cousin and I were diagnosed at the sametime and our alc test was the same. He went right on insulin and I went on glipized? I'm not understanding why the differance in treatments.

Type 1 will always go on insulin because they do not produce any. Type 2 will depend on many factors and test results like how much insulin you produce and how high your numbers are, not really the a1c though. It also depends on the doctor. In my mind there really isn't any difference between the two, they are all just tools in managing diabetes.
