I’m new to diabetes about 10 months this has made a complete life change for me and my family. Does any one know where I would be able to get the Bayer contour USB for a fair price or free? The reason I ask is because I lost my truck driving job because of diabetes, my doctor will not pass me on my DOT physical. If anyone knows where or how to get one for a discounted price please let me know thank you my email is amorrisangel@aol.com small thank you and GOD Bless all.

It may be more work for you, but just record the numbers from whatever meter into a spreadsheet. Then create a graph from those numbers. The visual presentation will be more meaningful for both you and your doctor. This approach presupposes you have available and are comfortable using a spreadsheet such as Excel. If not, then disregard this recommendation, unless you have a family member or someone else who can to it for you.

Just got to bayer's website, they will send you a machine free, but you have to buy the strips. Good luck

Yes, simplewins also has a section on how you can save money on other items you need … there appears to be many benefits to joining the site - as well as a free metre as amyc40 said.

go to simplewins.com for a free upgrade on your old meter or get a new one from Bayer. Hope this helps!

There are lots of meters online for free, that will do what you want to do. Just google free meter and you will have four come up off the bat. If you will ask you doctor, he can get you the meter and strips and meds for free!!! Go to your local Health Dept. and they will get you what you need. I don't know what state you are in, but each state has local support for diabetics needs and meds. I hope this helps and God Bless!

Have you tried looking on line? I found that it will run you about $100 with Walmart and CVS. That is the lowest I'v found it. I will also tell you that you will need to make sure that you PC is compatable for it as well. Happy looking. :-)

If you are near a CVS Minic Clinic they have a free A1c starting 10/24 to 11/24/2010, or until supplies run out.

amorrisangel 2010-10-25 10:38:09 -0500 Report

is that at all CVS"s

Pynetree 2010-10-25 12:37:42 -0500 Report

No, only the ones with a Minute Clinic in them…It is a promotion sponsered by Bayer. This is just the A1c test…not a glucometer. Info go to CvS on line or call 866-389-ASAP (866-389-2727) Free A1c 10/24 to 11/24 while supplies last

I am not a physician and am sorry to say that I don't know a lot about patient resources, though you are surrounded by experts here on Diabetic Connect.

But I did want to offer you some emotional support. I read between the lines in your post and I detected that you are going through a lot of stress right now, financially and I would guess emotionally. Adjusting to a new medical diagnosis isn't easy, and when a chronic condition like diabetes impacts your livelihood, then the stress is compounded.

I would encourage you to make sure that you have adequate support, and that your family does as well. You may want to look into support groups in your area, for patients and families. It's important take care of your mind and your spirit while you are also taking care of your physical health.

I'm glad you are reaching out to your friends on Diabetic Connect. Feel free to ventilate when you need to, and please keep us posted! You are on my mind!

Hi Guy, I recieved 3 of the same meter from areas on line, such as the one that led me to this sight. Several meters can be gotten through the companies online.

amorrisangel 2010-10-22 09:17:04 -0500 Report

well. the reason I wanted the meter is it would be easier to carry around and keep tract of my test plus my doctor would be able to download the info straight to his computer. I have other meters like the breeze 2 but I would like to be able to find a trend on when my sugars are out of whack and it seems it would be easier to track it on my computer than look at a meter.

idamtnboy 2010-10-30 20:37:34 -0500 Report

Read my new post about testing strategies. It'll give you some of my thoughts with regard to "sugars out of whack" and your doctor downloading your data.

kdroberts 2010-10-22 10:07:54 -0500 Report

OK, if you want that functionality then the cheaper off brand meters are out. The USB is a great meter and it will do what you want but if you don't have insurance you will be paying close to $1 per test strip. If you do have insurance you need to make sure the strips are covered. If not, most of the other meters have software and optional cables to hook up to a computer, even the Breeze2.

omahapack 2010-10-25 09:20:09 -0500 Report

Right on. Most strips are at the $1 per. It is the meter and the lancets that generally vary a bit. Insurance coverage and preferences vary way too much. Good luck finding what you need. I am at a loss to help. I have had so many different meters sent that I have had to find friends to give some of them to. I am not familiar with the USB.

amorrisangel 2010-10-22 10:28:49 -0500 Report

my insurance will cover my strips, lances, and such but they will not cover the meter you would think most meter companies would offer a free meter just to get the revenue of the strips and lances even on the higherend modles like the contour usb or the One Touch UltraSmarth. but hey thats just me i look at the long term revenue i would rather give a free meter and have a residual income from strips & lances then just sale the meter to them

kdroberts 2010-10-22 10:54:01 -0500 Report

Both those meters are available for free, I have got 2 ultrasmats and one USB for free, but I had to go through my doctor to get them. If you call the meter company and explain that you can get the supplies covered but not the meter you may be able to get one.

kdroberts 2010-10-22 07:45:12 -0500 Report

Why do you need that particular meter? It's a great meter for sure but the test strips are expensive and there are much cheaper alternatives about. Bayer have started to give out free samples of the meter so your doctor should be able to get hold of one for you. They are still not giving them for free if you call directly and ask though.

Harlen 2010-10-22 06:51:43 -0500 Report

You can call them and ask if they would send you one

Try checking with your local Goodwill. Thats where my husband found his Tens unit for pain. Check your local health care agencies. Like Arizona's DES, or maybe a Church group. Your non-profet hospital might offer some ideas. Have you checked Bayer to see if they have a patient assistance program?
I wish you the best of luck.
