Hi everyone. I'm 40 and was just diagnosed 10/11. My parents are diabetic, as well as one of my siblings, so this is not a total surprise. My mother passed away this summer and it was a real wakeup call for me. I am morbidly obese and had already started on the Atkins diet prior to getting my diagnosis. Pretty scary that my hg A1C was still high even after I'd been low carbing it for a month. But, here I am!

Just wondering if anyone else is following the Atkins plan? Blessings!

Hi everybody,
I've just been diagnosed with diabetis and have radically changed my carb intake in the last 3 months. However, I have only lost 5 pounds. I know I need to exercise more and today I am getting back on track. No one seems to give me any good answers re: drinking alcohol. I usually have 2-3 drinks a night…how much alcohol can be taken or is there a limit? I know this sounds stupid but all the carb books say there are no carbs in vodka etc…who knows the answer!!
thanks, CC

Hello Cmthinker, and welcome to the site.

Alcohol does a number on your numbers and adds a lot of useless calories to your diet. They may be allowed, but if you are trying to loose weight, I would suggest loosing some of the drinks. Specially if they are mixed drinks. Those can add a lot of hidden things in them.

Here are some other discussions that talk about alcohol.

Here is a video on how alcohol works on your sugars

It will take 3-4 months for your A1c to show the real improvement based on a large treatment change like going on atkins.

Hi Mrsdean4,
Welcome to the community, and I hope that you find what you need here. There are a lot of great folks that can help you find your way.

There are a couple of members who follow Atkins in part, usually the later phases that include more veggies. The real trick is to make what you do a lifestyle change and the Atkins diet is not really recommended for prolonged use. It is a great way to jump start things though...and loosing weight will be a big help to the overall control of your levels.

I have a great cookbook called the "Carbohydrate Addict" and it has a lot of low carb and veggie filled recipes. South Beach can also be a great source for recipes and understanding the values of foods.

Again, welcome to the site. We are all here to help.
