According to my prescription tag from the VA I have to throw my insulin away after 28 days. This means that I am throwing away a half a bottle and feel this is a waste. I have just started taking insulin and only take 15 units a day, the pharmacist told me today that so long as I leave it in the refrigerator that I can still use it. Has anyone else run into this problem and if so how did you handle it. Any information woud be a big help.

Thanks in advance for your help and advice,

I am with the VA also an they give me Novolin- N - an R. One is for 8hr an the other is 3hr but both are good for 1 year as long as you keep them in the frig. Once you start using the bottle then you have 30 days at room temp before you discard it. When you use it you have to put air in to get the insulin out an that damages the insulin so it shortens the life, If its in the frig it has a longer life.
Take a look at alkaline water an see what it might do for you.. I am a type 2 an on the 8th of last month i started drinking alkaline water at 9.5 ph level an have not had to take any insulin since then… at 5 pm today my number was 78 an this morning it was 140 when I got up… Just a though you might look it up an see what it does for you… Hope this will help you for it has me…

What type is it? Once you start using a vial almost all types breakdown and are only good for 28-30 days regardless of where you store them. Ask your doctor about switching to pens if one is available for the type of insulin you use. They only have 300 unites per pen rather than 1000 in a vial so you will not waste any and a box will last over 3 months.

Hi Rubys. I have a similar situation. I use Novolog in the 10mL vial and its last me about one and a half month. As long as you keep it cool (not cold), and out of the sunlight, it can last between 1 to 2 months. I would try going beyond 2 months, it start to lose it potency.
