Ok yall I finally got my A1C from my doctor and I am not real sure how good it is. I did take care of my Mom for years with Diabetes but we did not have the A1C I don't think or I had not heard of it anyway. So can yall tell me if a A1C of 6.8 is good or not please?

Thanks Yall

When I was first DX with Diabetes, my Dr. said that 6.8 is the number we were shooting for. You should be happy and feel good that your A1C is at this level. Congratulations!

Thank you very much. I am trying really hard to stay between the ditches. I was even a good girl when the neighbor brought over the left over cake from her sons birthday party. Everyone was going on about how rich and good it was and I just ignored them, as best I could lol. Thank you for your help and support!!!

Lori you are a stronger woman than I…Can not pass up cake, pie, cookies. Just have to limit myself…works most of the time…Managing to keep A1c at 6.4…but struggle !

Howdy Pynetree. I eat my sweets, don't think for a min I don't. But I have a wonderful hubby and daughter that seek out sweets for me to have and sometimes it's a bust when they bring it home and I try it and it runs my sugar up. But you just have to try and see, check the sugar and the carbs both. I will add the sugar and the carbs together and subtract the fiber if that together is under 10 I will try it, but start small just in case. Just a note sugar alcohol effects different people different, I can eat it no problem but it might drive the next persons sugar threw the roof. Hubby even buys me No Sugar Added Triple Chocolate Ice Cream, and I can have 1 good solid scoop of it as long as my sugar is not up after dinner, thats about a 1/2 a serving. The sugar free stuff is out there and it is good to, my hubby and daughter eat it even tho they are not Diabetic. Tonight I had a 6oz Great Value {from Wal-Mart} Light Key Lime Pie Yogurt and it was good, you just gotta look. Just remember to try it and watch your sugar and always when you want to add something different ask your Doctor if he/she thinks this is ok, that is what they are there for, now that don't mean ask them everything to buy but if you are wanting to try the sugar free stuff ask them about it, And remember they work for you. And ask if there is a formula they like to use. I like the sugar + carbs - fiber = less than 10 but ask your Doctor if they like that one or a different one. I hope this helps some, if you need anything else feel free to message me anytime. And if you like you can add me as a friend if we are not friends already.

Good Luck & God Bless, :o)

That's my goal…kept mine under 6 for over 5 years. Then last october '09, it creeped up to 6.4, Jan.'10 it went to 6.8, April hit 7.! Working it slowly back down, 6.4 in August. Hoping I'm under 6.0 in Nov.

This might give you some idea of where you stand but keep in mind that a lot of factors go into an A1c so the number itself can only be used as a guide and is best used in conjunction with other tests like fasting and post meal blood sugar, blood pressure and microalbumin.

Thank you for that information Kbroberts I will keep that in mind. Does the A1c need to be a fasting test? Just wondering I know at least 1 of the test she did was a fasting test she had been trying to catch me fasting for a few weeks to do one of them just not sure. And I do my fasting every morning. I may fudge on some of the others but not my fasting bs it is first off the bat lol.

Thank you,

A 6.8 is a great A1c. As you continue to progress you will see that it drops lower and your doctor should be thrilled with that as well. Always ask for a copy of your lab work so you can compare it to your next one and keep tabs yourself on what kind of goals you want to reach. That is great!!

That is a good idea…We always leave a SASE when we go for bloodwork at our Dr.'s office, so they mail us a copy.

There are many numbers that we can shoot for depending on whose guidelines you are following. Non-diabetic folks can have A1c's in the mid 4's and if you get there you are a saint! Anything in the 5-7 range is good. The American Diabetes Association and most doctors are happy when it is below 7. The one issue that they don't consider is if you are struggling with lows. That does lower your A1c, but at an expense you might not want to have. Going low often can be just as damaging as going high, so your daily numbers are still important in the overall scheme of things.

Thank you for the information!!!! I so wish I could lose weight!!!!!!!!!! I have been on a 1881 cal diet for like a month now and can't even get all those calories in and I have still not lost a drip. And I track everything I eat and sugars and what I do on my www.livestrong.com and I never go over my calories cause I can't eat them all lol. But I will get there. HUGE Congrats to you for dropping your weight and your A1C. Good Luck with it and stay strong.
