I know this is going to fly in the face of what most of you have been taught, but when you have constant hunger pangs you are :
A. eating to many carbs
B. NOT eating enough fat. Despite what most of us have been taught, fat is filling. Eating fat doesn't make you fat. Whenever I experience hunger I eat something with a little fat and protein like peanut butter or cheese.

Thank you for your input. How true, How
True, eating protein and some fat does work. I was eating more Protein and fat,
but between my Husband and Doctor, who
was worried about Kidney Disease, so I started eating Vegetetrin, which was
wrong for me . To many Carbs. So I am
back to proetin and a litttle fat. Thanks again.

I also personally think its the CARBS. But when I was on dialysis I had a low protein and drank alot of protein mix they gave me. But before when I had kidney problems I had to limit my protein, but not by choice. I too also agree protein is a big staple in a diet over carbs though…Debe

I was diagnosed about two years ago and have pretty much been in denial ever since. I did lose 20 pounds in the beginning; however, it's always been a struggle to keep from eating at night. So I eat. Slowly, my BS is creeping up. I truly believe my "hunger" pangs are a result of the fact that I don't drink enough liquids, because when I do drink at night, I don't want to eat. The down side of that is that I have to get up during the night to relieve my bladder. Sometimes ya just can't win!! :)

I don't understand how your Doctor cannot be concerned about your high blood sugar counts and the weight gain. I had noted in the past the higher the blood sugar the hungrier I was. Makes no sense seems like we should not be hungary at those time. Plums, peppers, air popped popped corn, and pickles are what I eat when I am like that and can't look at another celery rib. And, I think the vinegar in the pickles actually reduce the sugar count. Also a POLISH Dinner, saurkraut, polish sausage and a couple of peirogies. Is filling and leaves a low sugar count afterwards. I say check your meds. One of them might be adding to the muchies craving. One of mine,Vicatin, was. And, I have been a compulsive over eater most of my live. It was like throwing kerosene on a fire. I know pain triggers my hungar too. I seek food for comfort. Overeaters Anon. might help you too. Hope some of my thoughts help. Queen Of Flirts

I snack on dill pickles, plums, roasted jalepno peppers, as well as the classic celery sticks, bell pepper strips. and ocassionally sugar free chocolates and hard candy. If anyone knows of a cure for the starving let em know, PLEASE

There has to be someway that Diabetic people can be somewhat healthy and not be so misable. Our Doctors sometimes just do not understand. And maybe someday
the Doctors will give more understanding
to their patients. I will keep you informed on everything I have learned

Hey Penny,
Though it is tough being Diabetic at times, it is not always doom and gloom for us. I have shared with a few others that in my case, getting diagnosed with Diabetes over 14 years ago did not mean anything to me, but when I almost died from some complications of the disease in October 2003, I realized that I needed to take it seriously. Because of this disease, I am more healthy today than I have been since my early 20's. It took a few years to get to this level, but it is achievable. Life can be worth living, even as a Diabetic. And boy do I live it now…LOL Some like Gabby and DonnaAnn know the things that I do now, which is considered hard for most my age let alone being a diabetic too…LOL

With the support of all your friends here, you will make progress I'm sure!
You guys are always in my thoughts and prayers. John

Hi Penny,
Something that I am just begining to try is Chia seeds. You soak them in water and it helps the water you drink fill you up, as they hold 7 times their size! Busy little buggers.
Anyway, there are many other health benefts to them, but they are an easy way to add fiber to your diet, and fiber makes you feel full.

2008-09-26 09:08:32 -0500 Report

Hi Gabby,
I am going to try them. I am going to the Health Food Store next week. I will get some. Do you use them on Salads?
Thank you. Have you tried the health bread Eziekal ( sp)

GabbyPA 2008-09-26 10:40:51 -0500 Report

The chia can go on anything. I soak my daily ration in a mason jar and add it to my water during the day or my tea. It really has no flavor so it just adds a kind of weird texture, but not a bad one. Tonight, I stir fries some veggies and threw a tablespoon in and it was an easy way to get the fiber in there.

I have tried Ezekiel bread. I personally am not a bread fan, and I don't like it. However, my mom likes it, specially toasted for breakfast. There are several varaities for it, and the carbs are great on it.

2008-09-26 12:45:02 -0500 Report

Thanks Gabby,
You gave some good input, I will try the bread once. Is it low carb? I am goning to get chia seeds, they have to good.

you need to drink more water or fluids. Try eating foods full of fluids like fruits and veggie filled with water. This will help you feel full. Try eating protien with your meals. protien carries your carbs longer.

As it was explained to me in the diabetes class I took, if the sugar isn't getting into your cells, where it belongs, because of low insulin or insulin resistance, it hangs out outside your cells where it's picked up and ends up in your blood stream. Your cells aren't getting fed (which is why we do need some carbs) and your brain decides it will prompt you to eat more as it's starving on a cellular level. Once my blood sugar was under control, most of the time my appetite was, and is, as well.

OH-BOY First of all please,Id consider getting A second opinion, or/and if you feel like your not being heard by current doctor,YELL!!
I had those same symptoms you are, before I was diagnosed and put into ICU; with ketacodosis.
EEN SCARY;My mind and memory was diminishing, Id forget, longknown names, numbers and dates.and get lost in a small small town I had lived in for 3 yrs. A week before I was in ICU, I was stoped for a suspected D.U.I I was straight SOBER!!
And the truth, I did not see that I
was so badly ill.

The high sugars, cause hunger, thirst and fatigue. If your sugars are high and you eat and dont take insulin to compensate for the high sugars and the amount of carbs. your adding to it then, ??

I may be wrong its just that I got some great goose bumps reading your symptoms and even though you say your type 2, it so greatly reminded me, of ME…
I hope you can gain the "MO_JO" or? to challenge your DR> to take you, for you and help you get to feeling better…
…also, high munbers can cause depression, and that only adds to the over-all "POOPEE-Feelings"
Good luck

If your blood sugar is high, I think you do feel more hungry. Your insulin isn't getting into your cells. Your cells think you're hungry. When I got my blood sugar under control (with meds and diet) I found myself much less hungry. Maybe work on getting the blood sugar under control first? Are you watching your carb intake?

I've heard that sometimes when you feel really hungry, you actually are thirsty and your brain is mixing up the signals that your body is sending. Thirst would make sense given your high BGs.

I know this certainly isn't the only thing going with you, but it might be a part of it!

caspersmama 2008-09-23 03:54:17 -0500 Report

My Dr. says that when you feel hungry drink a glass of water and wait 30 minutes. If you are truly hungry then eat, but like you said your body may just need something. I have found sugar free gum and hard candy work when you think you need something. But my thing was snacking so much and since I have gotten more under control that seems to have subsided some.

Your worrying and stressing about things are also going to have an impact of how much you eat. Stress will drive you to thinking you are hungry. Like someone else suggested, try eating some raw veggies when the urge gets to be too much. Also try to find some ways to deal with the worrying. Either some deep breathing exercises, or listening to some music, or whatever gives you relaxation. Take your mind off you troubles a bit, and you will also take your mind off your hunger.
I promise you that if you can find a way to stress less, your cravings will also start to go away.
I wish you the best of luck, and you will be in my thoughts and prayers. John

marvinvwinkle 2008-09-22 09:43:18 -0500 Report

If you are hungry, it's because you are hungry or depressed. If it is depression, you need to realize it and get some help with it. If it is because you are hungry, then maybe you should start eating 6 to 7 smaller meals a day. You can eat some very filling meals just watch the carbs. Also you have to understand that high blood sugar causes you to want to eat more. As you get your blood sugar into control, the desire to eat goes down. I know, because I have lost the 100 lbs you are talking about, but still have about 30 lbs to go. If I slip I just bring my self back and don't get down on myself. I really believe that most people that have lost a lot of weight slip sometimes, they just don't give up. Good luck to you(because you are the only one that will bring you luck) and start your journey today, one step at a time. Patch
