If I drink a coke it's when I'm very thirsty and hot. Then a cold coke hits the spot and quenches my thirst. I drink water with my meals or tea. It is recommended to drink hot tea with meals to help digestion. Read this on one of these sites a while back.

I stopped drinking sodas this summer and I found i did not miss it as much as I thought i would. I used to have a diet mountain dew by my side all day and diet ginger ale at night. I started drinking more water and diet ice tea that I make. Now if I have a soda it make me want to eat more carbs. I also found that the diet mountain dew (just one can) kept me up late because of the caffiene.
I do remember when soda was a treat and not the norm. Hmmmm something to think about when trying to figure out how to handle what we eat and drink.
Oh yeah, I lost 20 pounds not trying!

I have pretty much given up all sodas; diet or otherwise. I drink mostly water and some decaf unsweet tea. There are so many chemicals in the sodas that I don't care to consume anymore. Mine is a personal choice. My doctor did not tell me to stop, but I felt 100% better when I gave up diet soda.

I want to make a prediction, sometime in the future as the A1C threshold for diagnosing DM keep on getting lower (from 7.0 to 6.5 already, then 6.0,5.7,finally as low as 5.5), and people's dieting habits keep on getting worse, there will be as many as 1/3 - 1/2 of the population being diagnosed DM sometime in their lives. Due to better public acceptance and better testing precedure, average age of DX will be 10, 20 years younger than now…Today's Coca Cola and Pepsi inc is tomorrow's Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds. People (and their lawyers) will become more and more health conscientious, and the 'witch hunt' will never end. (and it is not necessarily a bad thing). Imagine it is 1960 now, will you smoke just because everyone else is smoking?
