I was wondering if anyone can help me. My outline so far is,

I. What is T2 D
II. Reasons children get T2 D
III. Solution to prevent it

I was wondering if anyone had any good websites to go to for like the perfect definition of T2 diabetes. And also the things that factor into children getting T2. Anything will help.
Thank You

Here is some info on type 1, one thing that might be good is to help people understand the difference. http://www.jdrf.org/

Here is another site that gives you some symptoms of both http://www.diabetessymptomsonline.com/symptoms-of-juvenile-diabetes.htm

This one is an online community geared for kids with diabetes, I am sure you could ask some questions there and get the kids involved. http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/

This is a great one that is geared towards kids with type 2

One more, this is an article that offers some suggestions to "prevent" it http://www.parentdish.com/2010/01/29/identifying-and-preventing-type-2-diabetes-in-kids/

Hope that helps some. There are tons of them out there. You will have to tape your speech and then post it on YouTube so we can post it here in our video section. That would be awesome!!

My suggestion is to change the topic heading of II. to read "risk factors" and of III. to read "control " rather than "prevent." Unfortunately there are no known causes nor cures for diabetes. Worth noting for your research/report is that Type II was formerly known as "adult onset diabetes" and with so many younger people getting the Type 2 diagnosis, the "adult onset" no longer fits the description for Type II. Good luck with speech… get the facts!!!

The problem you have is that type 2, or really any diabetes, is not well understood and it's not know what causes it or how to prevent it. There are risk factors (note, risk factor is not the same as cause) but it's also not understood well what role they play. Obesity and inactivity are the classic buzz words but other risk factors are things like being nature American, your birth weight, your parents and genetic factors. Until the cause and mechanism of action for type 2 is figured out, it's very hard to say how to prevent it. Personally I think the expansion of the gene pool OS probably the biggest reason for the increase in type 2 cases, more of the 'bad' gene spread down through generations and mix with other genetic make ups.

From the American Diabetes Association:

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. Millions of Americans have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and many more are unaware they are at high risk.

In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can lead to diabetes complications.

Under 20 years of age

186,300, or 0.22% of all people in this age group have diabetes
About 1 in every 400 to 600 children and adolescents has type 1 diabetes
About 2 million adolescents aged 12-19 have pre-diabetes

Good luck with your speech!
