Howdy yall, I hope I am doing this right for it is my first post here. Please tell me if I need to do something else. I have been prediabetic for many years but have always been able to control it with diet as long as I behaved. But a few months ago my sugars were in the 200's and 300's and my doc flipped. Put me on 2 med that cost an outrageous amount of money and I told her I had no insurance and I could not afford the meds. So she switched me around gave me samples for 1 and gave hubby a number to call the manufacture and possible get it free or at a great discount, and this was 4 weeks ago and hubby still has not called. I am getting worried cause I am going to run out soon and I do not have $250.00 for it. Also I do not know how to show or to tell hubby…I have tried to many times and it has all been for not…how my diet should run. He wants to give me bread and potatoes and gravy and rice and we eat out a LOT. Fried mostly and I have had burger and fries 3 times this week alone. I am lost here any ideas?

I am sorry for not updating yall but things have been really hectic here. We have a family Thanksgiving this Saturday and I have been fighting with my children about going. I know they are grown and have there lives to tend to but the family also has a few really sick people and this is my sis n laws way of getting pics before we lose any…ya that may sound morbid but family is family. Anyway I got Merck to give me a years worth of my Diabetic meds for free yeah me. I went on-line and got the app. I needed and downloaded it and filled it out and sent it to them. It took them almost a month to get to it but I have it now and I am very happy. Now if I could just get hubby to understand I need to turn my meals to a more of a veggie stand point I would have it all whooped lol. I am really thinking about going veggie or even vegan just not to sure if it would be a good idea yet. Does anyone have any pros or cons on the subject? I have started losing weight. I am not sure how much but I am able to wear cloths I have not been able to wear in sometime now and some of my jewelry that has not fit in a while fits now or is to big lol yeah me lol. I am still smoke free and have been for 7 months and a week now, another yeah me. So yes I am doing better still am having some high BG but I think that is my fault, due to for some reason I have all of a sudden starting to miss my am meds. I will think to myself, I need to take my pills, and even look at my pill caddy and say, ok now when you are done here take your pills, and next thing I know hubby is home from work, he gets off at 5:30pm and home about 6:00pm so it is to late to take them at that point, and asking me if I took my pills today grrrrrrr me. But I am working on my mind set to STOP what I am doing and take them. I want to thank yall for all the help and advice and my life is a little more on track thanks to yall.

God Bless

Lori, I'm so glad for you. You are doing great!! I thought about going vegan also. But I know that I need the protein. Also, I really love steak!! LOL

HisTxLady 2010-11-22 14:00:01 -0600 Report

Thank you very much Jeannie I am working hard to stay on point here and I think I am doing some better. As far as the protein I know I can get that other places like peanut butter, other nuts, some beans and such. But thank you again for your thoughts of encouragement.

God Bless :o)

Excellent! Good for you on your not smoking, weight loss, and working to remember your meds. I think whether or not you want to be a vegetarian is totally up to you and all your needs. I eat a lot less meat, but am reluctant to give it up entirely. I eat fish on average 3 times a week, and vegetarian meals maybe 2 times a week, and the rest is 3-4 oz portions of lean meat with lots of veggies. Keep up the good work!

HisTxLady 2010-11-22 14:13:11 -0600 Report

Thank you for your words of encouragement also. As far as veggie or vegan I am getting to the point I don't care for the taste of meats. 1st off I do not like anything that swims lol never have, as far as beef goes I used to LOVE meat, esp. steak, but even that does not taste good to me. I have gotten where I do not like chicken, beef, pork, any of it to be honest. I also feel I will lose more weight faster if I cut it out. But I don't know if it will hurt my Diabetic Diet if I cut them all out, just a little nervous on that fact to be honest. Than you again for your words of encouragement I greatly appreciate them.

God Bless :o)

I understand the moeny problem because meds cost way to much, call the doctor and tell the doctor you need the number again, and then make the call yourself, most places have other food choices, and if you can not order a salad then omit the fries and eat only half the hamburger. I know it is ruff but you need to sit hubby downa nd have a talk with him about your health and what can happen if you do not get your numbers down. Contact the doctor today because I find nothing gets done or done right unless I do it myself. Execrise can never hurt unless you have been told not to walk, talk to the doctor about other things you can do and ask for a diet sheet, and if husband does not want to eat better or the same food fix yourself what you should eat and then either let him go out or fix his own or fix him something just for him, you have to take care of you because no one else is going to have to go through what you do if you don't, how would hubby feel if you lost your legs, eyesite or something even worse, heck I eat oatmeal and I dislike oatmeal but if it is going to help save my life I will eat it. Take care and I wish you the best of luck!

Another thing I have done with burgers is I have omitted half the bun, or sometimes all of it, when I had to eat a fast food burger. That is not Lori's whole problem, but it is a piece of the problem.

Sorry I was misunderstood, I did not mean to make anyone think that Lori's whole problem was her eatting habits. I just figured it was a start, that is the first thing the doctor told me was to eat this, not that and then gave me a sheet of stuff I could eat, I did not eat bad before because I love to cook, but when you sit down and figure that some of the stuff I was eating was not great like corn and mashed potatos but I had always baked chicken, turkey or roast I really did not eat fried food! Sorry jayabee 52 if I was not more clear.

GabbyPA 2010-09-12 07:47:46 -0500 Report

I guess my first question is why does your husband have to make the call? Why can't you call the manufacturing company? As far as the meds, you doctor should also take into consideration your economic situation. If they are too much, an alternative should be given if possible. My doctor prescribes generics for me. That is all I can afford.

Next, if you are eating out a lot, the choices are going to be yours not his. Unless you are only eating at a burger only joint, there should be other options. Steamed veggies, salads, baked foods. Water or unsweet tea instead of soda or juices. It just takes a little effort. Something a lot of people do is ask for a doggie bag right at the start of the meal and put half of the meal in that before they eat. Portion sizes in most of our restaurants are way too large, so that might help as well.

Maybe you can cook the meals for a while or cook them together to teach him the rules. I had to work on family a lot to not serve corn, potatoes and fried fish. It doesn't sound too unhealthy, but when you start to understand, it gets easier.

Diet and exercise are free, so those two things can be your best friends. It takes time to get them figured out. As some others have said, it is your life, put your foot down and make sure you are doing all you can to help yourself. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to take care of yourself. You can do it.

Well to start with I have asked him for the number she gave him and his answer is "I will handle it do you not trust me" and I can't bring myself to tell him no I don't. He tries so hard and he feels he is doing what I need by finding sugar free stuff in the stores. But the part I can't get him to understand is it takes more than sugar free sweets. When I try to talk with him about it he answers " I don't care what anyone else says, even the doc, you can not cut sugar and carbs from your life completely it does not work that way. You need so much sugar and carbs everyday or your body will not function properly." As far as the eating out no we don't go to restaurants he goes to the fast food places and picks it up and brings it home. Stuff like Burger King, Jack in the Box, KFC, and Tony's Bar b q. Even when we cook at home it has pasta or potatoes of some kind or rice and he loves to pan fry meats I am not sure he could eat baked meats. Oh wait he does bake foil dinners in the oven. But I do not count that as baked cause everything is cooked in the grease off the meat he uses. I have tried to tell him I need more veggies and to drop the sides… potatoes and rice and such…but he does the grocery shopping and if its not bought it can't be cooked. And no I don't go to the stores it kills me to go to the doctor between my back and my knee it is very hard to do much walking. I know the more I sit the worse I get. But I am trying very hard to move around here at home. It is getting better I am working up to walks around the apt. building. It is just kinda hard to do that when all you have is a home oxygen concentrator you are stuck inside. I also know that some of this is my mental problems I get sever panic attacks when I go in public. I am working on that too. I guess you can say I am a work in progress lol. I do try yall I really do. When we go to Burger King I have them double the veggies and i only get one piece of meat to try to cut it down. But I am running out of ideas…I kinda just feel like giving up to be honest…but then I see the smiling faces of my 2 wonderful grand babies and then I tell myself no you gotta get it together for them. They are the beat in my heart…I love them so much. I also know to yall it seems like I am just whining…But to be honest I just don't get it he used to help me take care of my Mom…R.I.P. Mom I love you and always will…and we did pretty good but now its like he has forgot it all. I am proud of 1 thing I have done…I smoked for 27 years and i have managed to quit. I have been quit for 5 Months, 20 hours, 10 minutes and 11 seconds (153 days). I have saved $1,153.80 by not smoking 4,615 cigarettes. I have saved 2 Weeks, 2 Days and 35 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 4/12/2010 12:00 PM. OK I guess I have whined enough…oh wow I just looked st my clock and it is 815am I have been here all night…Time to get some rest. Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and support.

Lori; I know how it is to have others do things for you—my dear departed hubby did all for me for 22 years. Then he was gone and all had to be done by me for me. He passed almost 19 years ago. Now is the time for you to stand up and say—"Ok I will take care of all things for myself as this diabetes is personnal". Until your husband realizes the importance of doing things quickly and getting this taken care of, he won't do anything as he has no understanding of how he is playing roulet with your future. Just take the bull by the horns and take over caring for yourself—that is the only way this will get done for you—you must do it yourself. Go for it girl and join the group of people who are taking diabetes in hand and getting their own business taken care of. This is one time you must care for yourself. May God Bless and care for you and give you the courage to care for yourself now as diabetes is very personnal and only you can really control your life with diabetes. In Christ Always

You are a beautiful work in progress and as you find your way through this new thing, it will get easier. The smoking is noting to snub, that is a fantastic challenge and it is a great victory for you.

Something you can start with is to refuse the fries in fast food and make your sandwich open faced, meaning take the top bun off. You have to stick to your guns a bit. Maybe when he sees the food he buys doesn't get eaten, you will make your point.
I would also make a shopping list that he needs to stick to. Be upset when he doesn't buy what is on the list. Make sure it is filled with raw veggies that you can snack on. String cheese is another good snack. You don't have to bomb him with salads, but introduce healthy foods a few at a time and when he gets used to those, add some more. You will find a way.

Hi Lori, I don't know where you live but here we have Giant Eagle grocery stores that offer 5 different diabetic medications for free. If you have something like that in your area maybe your doctor can switch you to one of them. As for your diet you have to explain how important it is to keep your sugars down to prevent all the complications of diabetes. I have all of them and believe me it is very hard. When you go out to eat there are always healthier options, maybe you can chose one of them. I wish you the best and hope you are able to find the help you are looking for. If I can answer any questions please ask, I have been a type 1 for 23 years. Good luck.

Lori, I'm so sorry to hear this. Do you have the number for the manufacturing company? if not call your Dr. again for the number and call them yourself and tell them what is going on and you have no insurance. What type of medicine the Dr. wants you on and so forth.
I had to do this for a couple years for I didn't have insurance either and they were a God send.
As far as your husband either put your foot down and tell him that your diet has to change and you can't have certain items anymore, or take him to the Dr. with you so he/she may explain it to him.
I'm sure that he Loves you enough to want whats best for you.
You may also be able to go to the manufacturers website and download the papers needed to be filled out.
If you need to talk or need a shoulder, I'm always here just send me a Friend request. I wish the best of luck to you. Take care and May God Bless You in all you Needs.
