Sorry guys, ladies only…
What do you do to curb your cravings durning that time of the month? I used to crave chocolate, but that changed into just any kind of carb several years ago. Now that I am on the older side and not as regular, if you know what I mean, the cravings are like they stored up for the times missed and hit me really hard. I ate cereal, which I have not really touched since June. What a nightmare. Any suggestions??

Oh I am so happy to see this. I get the munchies so badly during the time of the month. Will be coming back here for advice. Thanks for sharing all your ideas.

By the way, can you tell me more about agave? I tried that other stuff, the bitter stuff, and hated it. Stevia! Yuck. What is agave and where do you get it? I am not a fan of the artificial sweeteners and wouldn't mind an alternative.

Agave is a nectar from a desert plant. It is similar to honey in the look and texture of it, but it is not as thick and doesn't have the strong flavor honey does. It also doesn't seem to spike our sugar in general. You will need to test and see what it does, because it has the carbs listed like sugar, but it is very friendly.
I get mine in Raw or Amber (more processed) form from my local health food store. I love it, and use it in a lot of things where I don't need the texture of sugar.
Funny, some people say stevia has a bitter after taste, I don't have that. Must be different taste buds or something. LOL

It must be. I can't eat grapefruit, as it tastes so bitter to me. Stevia leaves a horrible aftertaste in my mouth. I'll try agave. Is it in liquid form, and how does it taste in coffee and tea?

My step daughter loves it in her iced tea. She says stevia is bitter to her too. I imagine it would be great in hot tea as well. I don't know about coffee. try it, see if you like it.
I use it mostly in glazes and cooking. I drink unsweet drinks, so I don't use it as much.

Luckily artificial sweeteners don't make me crave carbs. I will try that chocolate, however. I love dark chocolate! I have found my blood sugar spikes around that time of the month, the week before. So much that my doc has me take twice as much metaformin during that week because my blood sugar always goes wonky.

I like celery too. Something I eat, but not everyone likes them, are the larger size green olives. I love them and when I feel like I'm starving, I eat a few of them and that big burst of flavor really helps me get through a munchie craving.

Ok now munchies is something that I understand. Especially that time of the month munchies. Chocolate? YES! Carbs in general? YES!! I am going to try that celery thing tomorrow. I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't had celery in years, wonder what it tastes like to me now…lol!!

I've been naughty tonight, I am eating some sunflower seeds. That always helps me. I think I'm going to get some sugar free hard candy, maybe that will help too.

GabbyPA 2008-09-24 00:22:15 -0500 Report

You know what? Sunflower seeds save my butt! I get the low sodium ones and when I am straying into the kitchen too often, I get a bowl and have busy, fussy work for a while. The shelling and the little that is actually in them keep me busy and help curb that "gotta have somethng" feeling. I don't find that they affect my numbers, so I always keep them on hand.

Don't do the sugar free candy...try a square or two of Lindt 85% cocoa. It is bitter sweet, but it cuts the crave if you want a little sweet, and not the salt.

Geezz, I should listen to my own advice! LOL

It's nice to know that the seeds don't affect your numbers. I havent found out if they affect mine or now, no scared!! LOL…

I love the darker chocolate, that is a good idea.

There are times when I just want to put something in my mouth…the seeds do help. And I stray to my kitchen bad this time of the month, but my laundry room is in there, so instead of the fridge, I do another load of laundry…lol

Thaks...I was wondering if anyone suffered this stuff, no one was posting. I used to crave chocolate (many years ago) but now it is carb crunchies. I have some herbal infusions, I will give them a try. I don't do the artificial sweeteners anymore, they make me crave more carbs, so I use agave now. Very nice stuff.
Thanks for the suggestions. Celery is magic isn't it. Good think I like it.

I have Type 2 diabetes. I noticed not only do I get the munches around that time, pretty badly, I also have blood sugar spikes that are high. I have been drinking really strongly flavored herbal teas (Republic of Tea has good fruity flavored teas) with artificial sweetener during that time. Not too sweet, just enough. I also keep fresh celery around, luckily I like it plain. The crisp crunch seems to help me a lot. For chocolate I have three of the mini sugar-free York Peppermint Patties.
