Over Labor Day weekend I crontractacted a bad chest cold and Sinus Infection.
And when I have a cold I like my orange juice, but with my diabetes know I can't have much. How much is to much? I have been having a small glass in the morning and a small glass in the evening.
It also hasn't been easy on my Asthma, Broncitis and COPD, in which I've been having to use my inhaler and Nublizer more. I would welcome anyone's advice, Thank you in advance.

I can not drink to much orange juice because it elevates blood sugar levels however I keep on hand Vitamin C in the form of Halls Defense which is a dietary supplement drops. They contain 6g of carbohydrate, 6g of sugar, Vitamin C 106mg 2 per serving. I too have had a cold since last week and I am feeling better. I did take with Green Tea because a many cold medicines run up blood sugar and blood pressure, too. Hope you feel better!!

I was told no more than 4 oz.'s. For ME that's only when my sugar is low! Does it raise your BS #'s? NanaEllen :)

I stay away from fruit juices, they do not agree with me… But I drink at least 4-5 bottles of ice cold water each and every day. I stay hydrated, bg #'s are good, and I just feel good.

Drink half your body weight in water. Over ice makes your system burn a few calories. Trop 50 is my new best friend. I could not have oj. It burned my stomach up. Then the 2 month before I was diagnosed I drank Simply Orange like a fish. I can only have Trop 50 in the morning or my sugar goes off track but that's ok. I still like it.

Drinking half your body weight in water would not be a good ideal [for a 200 pound person than would be 45 half litter bottles]… but drinking half your body weight in water "in ounces" could work [for a 200 pound person than would be 6 half litter bottles]

When I drink oj my sugars go higher too. I look for the ones that have less sugar and are not made from concentrate. There are some that have about 10 grams of carb to an 8 oz glass, which is pretty good for oj. You can still use the oj, but you may also want to check up on vitamin supplement of C. That can also help. Another thing that helps me with congestion is a cup of hot tea…I prefer raspberry or black raspberry as they are both antioxidents and help to relieve some of the congestion. Remember to stay away from any milk products as they have a tendancy to create more mucus. Drink lots of water to keep the mucus more fluid and so it won't tighten up more in your lungs . Hope you stay well!

OJ spikes my blood glucose, too, so I avoid it on normal days. I do like to add one of those little clementine oranges to my lunch if I don't have enough carbs. I love those!

Tropicana 50 is the thing to look for. That is the OJ I drink. Minute Maid also has a lower carb OJ drink, but I like the Tropicana better. Can also get Vit C in Tomato Juice, but it is high in sodium, not carbs.

imsuzie2, I found the Trop50 and just love it, thank you so much I appericate it. I asked my Dr. yesterday about how much is ok to drink, and she said while I'm sick like this it's ok to have 3-4 glasses a day just keep an eye on my bs as long as it doesn't go in the 300's. So she suggested while I'm drinking the oj to take my older dose of 1000mg of metformin 2x a day, but said the extra vitiamin C is really good for me.

Thank you so much, I'll look for it when I go to the grocery store. Tropicana is also my favorite. I'm not crazy for Tomato juice, but my husband loves it.
Have a Great day.

There are some other alternatives to orange juice to get your extra vitamin C. Even a lot of veggies have it. I personally stay away from juice of any kind, as it is a rough thing on my levels with minimal nutritional value. Eating an orange is much more beneficial to your body as a whole than drinking just the juice. You might want to ask your doctor about your options.

I find that orange juice spikes my blood sugar. However, because I enjoy it so much, I take advantage when my sugars are in the low 70's and drink a 6oz cup of it. Sometimes I get to drink two cups of it on days like that. Delicious!!!

Thanks Kaiyle,
I usually only drink it when my sugar drops below 70, except I like it when I have a cold or flu but don't drink it alot maybe 6oz. in the morning and 6oz. in the evening. And my bs has been running around normal the highest was 128.

It depends. What are your blood sugars like 60-90 minutes after drinking it? You may find that you can have a fair amount, you may find that you can't really have much. I use it for raising low blood sugar, I can't drink it just because I want to because it raises my blood sugar too much and too fast.

I always keep it in the house in case my bs does drop, and also my son loves it. He doesn't have diabetes Thank God and hope he never does. One good thing is I know I can control myself and not touch it even though it's there. My main drink is water, and do drink alot of that. Thanks for the info will talk to my Dr. next week when I go see her.

I was told by my doctor that I could have a 4oz glass each morning, as long as my level is not high when I wake up in the morning, so I check it and then when I get to my office I can either have oj or not, but at least it is not at home because I would drink it all the time.

Happy day,
I clicked I liked this because it's good conversation piece. Michael loves OJ so I try not to have it in the house on a regular because he gets carried away.it's one of his weakness along w/my home made tea. So I don't make it much, but I do cook for families & they order it alot. I can't tell you how much is to much are how much is not. But what I can tell you is drink & eat in moderation, keep a journal & how your #'s react to all. Be blessed & know that you are highly favored in the name of Jesus.

Working 4 Jesus, & Loving it.

Thanks Mama Dee I'll do this, and only drink when I have a cold or my bs bottoms out. I'm starting to feel some better this morning, maybe it was the alka seltzer my husband made me take last night.
Blessings to you and yours.
