I have been browsing through various calorie counter books for a couple days now to make a list of snacks that offer nutrition without high carbs or fat and thought I would start a list, letting each of you add your favorites to my list. What to eat and/or snack on seems to be a rather frequently asked question here and I think is a great topic for discussion and sharing amongst ourselves.

Here goes…

Hard Boiled Eggs
Protein Bars
Protein Shakes
Nuts / Seeds
Lean Lunch Meat
Low Fat Cheeses (including cottage cheese)
Low Fat Yogurts
Sugar Free Gelatin / Puddings
Grilled Veggies
Salsa w/ Veggies or low-carb chips
Tuna
Sugar Free Popsicles/Fudgicles
Sorbet or Sugar Free Frozen Yogurt

Your turn…

A good old fashion apple works for me, when I'm really hungry(which doesn't happen often) I add peanut butter.

I am sorry … it's August now but I saw this "featured article" I had started about a year ago and just started thinking about how this discussion turned sooo darn funny, especially with Cheryl713's comment below, "well, wake up and hand me a doughnut!" - Sorry, still laughing… out loud.

My indulgence is to plop 1 tbsp of natural peanut butter on one square of dark chocolate (Lindt or Dove). This yummy morsel has 6g to 7g of carb. I also love fresh berries of any kind.

LOL! I love that name. Makes you want to eat it just because. I love celery with peanut butter. I don't know who ever thought of that combination, but is is magic. I suppose I could use sunflowers seeds for my bugs. Raisins raise my levels too much.

There are many peanut butters that have a lot of added sugar and fats in them. I stick with the natural peanut butters when I can. They take a little getting used to flavor wise. I have found Skippy makes a natural one that doesn't separate and is creamier.

Since I started working and don't have much time for breaks, I put some almonds 10-12 in a baggy with a few craisins. I make up several to have and grab at any time during the day.

Thanks Gabby… I had to get the "America's Most Wanted" look off the website so as not to scare off the new members and while you can probably hear the song "Joy to the World (Jeremiah was a Bullfrog) playing in the background, that was indeed from a wedding… my own. C. 3-29-2002.

Hi everyone,

Great topic! I am always looking for new snack ideas for my clients so they can have something to eat in mid-morning and mid afternoon. My favorite snack is a handful of nuts, especially macadamias. Macadamias have a good proportion of omega-3s versus omega-6s, which makes them less inflammatory. Walnuts are also great, but they have a much larger amount of omega-6s versus omega-3s than our body needs so we need to limit the amount ingested to probably no more than 6 walnuts.

Have a great evening

I am just now hearing that Omega 6 is not good for people. I always thought you wanted the 3-6-9 type? So how do I find out about the Omega 6's in foods that I eat, it is not usually listed? I am hearing it his found in a lot of salad dressings, and I read that they are linked to Canola, Corn and another oil that escapes me.

I actually tried a cucumber smoothie and it lowered my levels as well. It was in interesting taste, but not bad. It is the value of the cucumber that makes it work it's magic. Snacking on cucumbers alone is one of the best ones you can do.

Here is the discussion that talks about it. http://www.diabeticconnect.com/discussions/955-another-all-natural-treatment

I think it was a peeled and seeded cuke, some water, lemon or lime juice and some mint. It is all kind of up to you and what you like.

I love tabbouleh and our garden cukes are so good in that. I love parsley and it is good for us too. You would love that. I have a recipe for it in the Recipe section. http://www.diabeticconnect.com/recipes/238-orange-chicken-tabbouleh
do it without the chicken and orange and you can have just the salad. YUM
this one is good too

Needless to say, I love cucumbers.

I have had this happen also. Olives will do the same thing. I wonder if it has something to do with the vinegar.

One of my snacks is celery with natural peanut butter. I do like those cheese sticks also. Specially the strings. Another one that I love is a dill pickle wrapped in a slice of lunch meat. However, the sodium is a bit of a trouble with that one, but it is good. Also a slice of lunch meat with cream cheese spread all rolled up. I like a ham with some chive spread.

Ya know I don't do eggs too often but it is possible to make egg beater or egg white omelets. Wife and I have an omelet maker from Walgreens ($10 or so) that is just awesome for quickie omelets (low fat cheese, seafood, veggies, etc). How I would love to find a recipe for a cheesecake omelet or a Hostess Ho Ho Omelet.
